Show a- Pogo 1 1 - A 1 Q7A Student Life Monday May 24 1976 Ibum revi Reserve Booths Students can start making re by Dave Kingham Entertainment Editor servation for food and crafts for the Pioneer Days Festival The festival begins July 27 in Central park Interested students can call Barbara Covert 3 Artist’s exhibits are at invitation only by booths 245-695- Todd Rundgren (Bearsville) Something’s wrong here Todd Rundgren has long been one of my favorites because he does it all and does it well He’s played everything from nice little pop ballads like “Hello It’s Me” turn out rock and roll like “Heavy Metal Kids” (which features the ever popular elegant three finger crazed maniac solo) to the electronic euphoria of “The Ikon” or ‘Treatise on Cosmic Fire” As a producer he’s acknowledged to be one of the best As a vocalist he’s refreshing As a key- board and synthesizer musician he is uniquely brillant As a guitarist he’s better than most What then is the problem? Here we have an album one side of which is filled with original °ther Wlth golden MyS first reaction to the oldies was they should be good he’s either going to ham it up as he did on Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Lord Chanceior’s Nightmare” or turn them into etherial electronic pieces as he did to Leonard Bernstein’s “Something’s Coming” Instead what we get is six exact replicas of the original songs When I say exact I mean down to the intonation in the voices I must admit Todd does a respectable Dylan and some perfect Beachboy harmonies but is that what you want to hear from him Maybe he’s trying to showcase his versatility as a vocalist and musician Maybe he’s trying to showcase his production wizardry by proving he cah recreate to the last detail everything from early Beatles to “Good Vibrations’ Maybe he just feels the songs can’t be improved upon Whatevery Todd’s purpose I don’t know if people will buy it of It’s almost like getting one-ha“K-Tof Hits Presents the Great the ‘60s” Side two is strictly original material but a bit disappointing The line up includes Todd on guitar keyboards and vocals John Siegler on bass Roger Powell on synthesizer and John Wilcox on drums The music is probably the simplest Todd’s played in a long time and he emphasizes the guitar more in his compositions “Black and White” opens the side with what might be described as oriental-fun- k guitar “When I Pray” is the album’s obligatory reggae tune featuring Todd singing in his very best Rastafarian accent and lyrics like “If I die before I wake someone made a big mistake” Not as good as his “King Kong Reggae” of some years back “The Verb to Love” is an anthem worthy of Todd Reminiscent of “Just One Victory” from- - the AWATS album Todd plays some nice “cocktail lounge” piano “Hamburger Hell” closes the album with some solid rock and roll and a comment on Ameica’s fast food culture There’s some good music and it’s probably even a good album but it’s not good enough for Todd Rundgren James Arrington author and performer of the one-maHere s Brother Brigham" will be appearing for formances show n 2 per- - only bn Thursday and Friday May 27 and 28 at the Theatr® in downtown Logan Tickets are available at the UC Ticket Office show One-ma- n “Here’s Brother Brigham” an n show written original and performed by James Arrington former USU Theatre Arts student presently in graduate school at BYU has been scheduled for 2 performances at the Lyric Theatre on May 27 and 28 Arrington’s dramatic portrait of Brigham Young began as a thesis project but has developed into a production in great demand throughout the state The one-ma- playwright-producer-perform- er has toured seveal Utah towns Arrington son of LDS historian Leonard Arrington has done some 3 years of research into the character he portrays on stage He says “I have come to know Brigham Young as a man who was loved even by his enemies Tickets for “Here’s Brother Brigham’’ are on sale at the UC Ticket Office only for the two 8 : 00 pm performance at the Lyric Theatre on Thursday and Friday May 27 and 28 mm mumimn'simmmmji 4s 11 2 a nu j factory lf el toihomca 3 0 Magnavox Model 00 Modular Music System 6-pi- ece includes a solid-stat- e Stereo FMAM Radio built-i- n Tape Player full-siRecord Changer (with dust cover) and two speaker enclosures mobile cart a and Even headphones ck ze BOOKS OF YESTERDAY Thousands of used put of print and rare books Paperbacks Vi cover price Free Search Service flail Lecaficn 3§ 17 Center Logon M 753-383- 8 ’ 374M-21- 7 Model: E-20- 00 Reg $30085 NOW COMPLETE SYSTEM FOR ONLY 1 kVE S10285 |
