Show n January 21 1976 Page 3 Concert Review t i 1 1 of P Eureka i good hut not great T if n 1 : 1 by Dave Kingham 's f ri f ? tj 4 ‘i i f Torrancy didn’t seem bothered by the cool reception taking liberal belts from what looked to be a gallon of cheap wine and patiently explaining his songs and jokes to the crowd By the tjme Torrance got to some of his more familiar material frorn the “Belle of the Ball” drums bass keyboard line-uwith Torrance handling all the ri ij ri i can only be described as a small lethargic crowd In the early going Torrance had a hard time warming the crowd to his brand of funky bluesey' southern rock Saturday night’s Eureka-Tow-- er of Power concert was a good show but far from a great show Richard Torrance opened the show with a somewhat streamlin- ed version of the Eureka that played USU last year Torrance has dropped percussionist Rick Cantu and lead guitarist Gary Rowles and reduced Eureka to a p v Guitar work himself I - : - Eureka took the stage to what ' 'i - ' MvWnmQT p - v 4m ' ’ r & 4 ‘ V er 1 1 i Ji ft f i 1 4 ' I £V 4 graphy - ' ' - 3 - t' if ' ' p-y- f v' i 1W' 2 ci ‘ ' I ’ ’ 2' f i ::4tKk ! ? If Lp f"Z - V- I ChesterThompson’s ”Ray Charles” hunch and head movements Tower of PoYer knows the soul band rulebook by heart Rule No 18 clearly states that all shows must have liberal sprinkings of ' ' “You people are loose and we love ya” raps between songs and plenty of tinny three chord guitar " shuffles and alternating falsetto :v and screaming vocals Perhaps I am missing the point of TofP’s music Perhaps you aren’t supposed to listen to their music more than once But to me there has always music as much as just feel it and get up and dance to it In this been a distinction between a respect TofP had considerable concert and a dance a concert although not overwhelming sue- - having everything a dance has in cess At times TofP had up to the way of feeling the music but half of the crowd on their feet much more in the Way of listening dancing and I must confess that to the music As a dance this show may have as I stood marveling at the subtlety of their show I caught been the best as a concert- it ' :: my knee flexing in timewith the didn’t make it - v s' ifJr : You can tell by keyboardist Ya 4yf I l Hf MM iM wimth) mm t ' ' ‘ ifc I h - LTA s t peals to a very limited audience Tower of Power has perser- verance They’ll play the same riffs and progressions over and over until you think you’re listen- ing to a 30 second tape loop They’ll repeat the same intricate three or four word lyric (Drop in the Slot What is Hip You Oughta Be Havin Fun You' Got to Funk- afize etc) until human endur- ahce is pushed to the limits Tower of Power?
