Unfounded worthwhile human beings each individual has the right to pursue those things in life and within a society which will work to fulfill his individual needs and happiness “This is the philosophy of the founders and participants in the Cache Opportunity Center” Joyce Davis chairman for the center said The Cache Opportunity Center is an agency which began with the help of the Community Action Program to establish a youth center in Cache Valley which would provide a place for youth between 12 and 20 to simply drop in and participate in activities all the time The building provided pool tables and pingpong tables table games records and a record player The biggest asset of the As program was volunteers who provided listening ears and acceptance to kids who for a short or long period have been alienated from the community Most of the target population came from low income families but some of it came from middle class or even upper class homes Broken homes and crumbling family structures were often in- establishment from which they felt alienated The program closed completely in November because of this problem and they are in the process of getting it started again in a more appropriate building near the heart of town A major fund drive is anticipated community wide to get the funds necessary for the building Youth recreation in this county is in the hands of two agencies principally They are the school district which provides community school programs in cooperation with Logan City which helps fund the summer recreation swimming pool The other agency is the LDS Church which provides a very adequate highly structured recreation program for all of the youth who associate themselves with the church The kind of recreation provided by the Cache Opportunity Center is quite different in that it is and Par ticipation is on an irEwlaual or group basis but the key to success lies in involvement of trained volunteers non-structur- ed Aware of problems p for the LEPA grant and is still supporting the program grant “A grant from the state bicentennial committee is being sought by the Cache Opportunity Center” said Davis “This grant would enable us to underwrite the purchase and remodeling of a building for the center” Would be open and thus the program would be open from 3 The building until 12 pm daily including Sundays and would need about eight volunteers a day so that for one week a reasonable number of volunteers would be about 60 Since most volunteers would work no more than once a week and most would prefer less involvement than that the recruiting and training of volunteers becomes a task that although it is done by volunteers can not really be done for a long period or adequately by volunteers The community Action Agency pm can provide some secretarial help and supplies needed for part of the year but the agency is being phased out A part of the job description for the director would be to involve the community and agencies that are now existing in Logan These volunteers are aware of kinds of kids and problems to the Some comments are better left and they are accepting expect unanswered but warm fruits of an d imbalance between little and who knew: “experts” self-style- talked loudly and those few who knew facts and were not afraid to speak I am speaking of the misguided efforts of governments to “improve the human race” through suppression of peoples considered to be inferior History sadly notes some results: ITQ tests in English given to immigrants at Ellis Island Restrictions to immigration of “inferior” people Overseas mass murder of innoents by the Nazis Where were the voices of those who knew the facts? Why were they not beard? It was the prevailing view then that scientists should not become involved in political matters Such men’s ivory towers run red with the blood that is on their hands also for by withholding evidence to the contrary they supported the tragic view that there are indeed STAB the dark in tonight! The school district provided the space last year at a minimal cost but both agencies need to see it work for a year before continuing the 1 HOUSE OF SOUND HOUSE OF SOUND bl 0) D O X Q Z D O V) u o UJ V) D o X UJe're Cleoning ip fiio Joint Reductions on LaFayette Audio Products EASY TERMS CASH ACCEPTED X O c Cfl m O n O c z O X 0 c if) m HOUSE OF SOUND HOUSE OF SOUND |
