Show November 12 1975 Page 4 EDITORIAL PAGE Viewpoint New anti-raci-- movement part st II by Student Coalition Against Racism (The following is the slightly abridged text of the report given by Thomas Bailey upon his return from the Second National Student Conference Against Racism) ty Nearly 1300 people attended the Second Annual NSCAR Conference The participants represented more than 60 SCAR chapters Introduction Black Sudent Unions Black jad Puerto Rican community orJgPP-zation- s and many independent students and groups Most of the delegates were from the East and the Midwest but there were also movement has developed which is supporting the Black community’s effort to gain equal rights in education At the center of Jhis new movement is the National Stuefent Coalition Against Racism Ken-et- h n Black Clark the sociologist called NSCAR the most important development in the civil rights movement in the last decade The National Student Coalition Against Racism was founded less than one year ago NSCAR worked closely with the NAACP in organizing large successful demonstrations last May 17 May 17 is the anniversary of the 1954 Brown vs Board of Education ruling that segregated education is unjust and unconstitutional The Boston demonstration of 15000 was larger than any the racists had held Leaders of the struggle attribute the relative calm in Boston (so far) this year to that massive show of support for the Black community This fall there has been a more serious effort by Federal State and local officials to keep the racist mobs in check and to protect Black students " Mike Moody a USU student represented us at the founding conference of MSCAR Many of us were active last spring organizing meetings rallies and a benefit concert that led up to a successful demonstration of 300 people May 17 in Salt Lake Three of us myself included went to Boston and carried a Northern Utah SCAR "banner in the May 17 march In Utah we worked closely with the NAACP Blacks Unlimited of Salt Lake the Black Studies Institute the Black Student association and the studentbody president of the University of Utah We worked with the BSU’s at Weber State and Utah State and with the NECHA and Many Eagles Indian Council at USU Although NSCAR’s work has been mainly to support the desegregation struggle we were centrally involved in the defense of Joan Little last summer We have actively opposed racism on many different fronts taking up local issues in cities across the A new anti-raci- st well-know- Tiation governments largegroups from California Colorado and Texas The Conference began with a Friday night rally The tlie me Years is Too was “Twenty-On- e Defend Black Rights” It Long on focused the refusal of Federal State and local governments to fully implement the 1954 Supreme Court decision against school segregation High point of the rally was the testimony of four Black high school students They told about the racist abuse and physical attacks they have had to endure in their fight to exercise their right to attend previously LECTURE "THE FlffUPB OF OUR EADNDMV' IS FWA THE 23RP fiSUAk Other Speakers ©COLLEGE MEDIA SERVICES'BOX 9411 BERKELEY CA94709 all-whi- te South Boston High schools TOUR REAPING FDR HAY NEXT" -- Other speaekers were Alice Cummings representing the largest teacher organization in the US the National Education Association Gary Kampel representing the largest university student organization in the US the National Student Association also Robert Allen editor of Black Scholar magazine Joe Madison of the NAACP Luis Fuentes first Puerto Rican high school principal in New York Arturo Rivera national president of the Federation of Puerto Rican University students There were a number of other speakers including Florynce Kennedy Black feminist attorney and writer The proceedings of the conference were organized into gen- High risers -- by Ray Com la eral sessions and workshops There were two main sets of workshops The first series dealt with busing and they were led by local desegregation leaders from cities around the country The second series dealt with their aspects of racism taking up everything from defense of individual victims of racism to fighting against cutbacks and raising college tuition The workshops were extremely useful I was able to learn from the struggles of students at other universities especially about efforts to defend minority programs and to fight against the rising cost of education The Convention Simply to hold an Conference in Boston’s' violent racist atmosphere is important support for the Black communi Anti-Raci- many student by phil frank FRANKLY SPEAKING st Due to length this article will be continued in the next issues of Student Life THE 0NLV IDIOTS WHO WANT A LOT ARE THOSE UW CAN'T NEW WALL PARKING A FEU FEE |
