quite nervous and has a tendancy to bite when he’s uptight” said Benjy Kaghan a senior at Utah wildlife State majoring in “They have a hard time relating to him and don’t understand his moods” added Kaghan Kaghan was referring to his pet snake Zepher a charming three foot reticulated python that originated Indonesia Zepher California hailing in from joined Kaghan’s collection of pets two and a half years ago At 81 lbs he’s nonpoisonous but “has a bit that could be uncomfortable” Zepher who has already become popular in the grade schools in Cache Valley can be found in his “Home Sweet Home” in a dresser drawer in Kaghan’s laundry room “Zepher would be a glutton with food if I let him” Kaghan said Zepher eats one or two large laboratory rats a month and occasionally enjoys a tasty hamster “If I allowed him to eat what he wanted” said Kaghan “he would eat a rat a week and would probably be up to his full length of about 6 feet 5 and without thinking and out of my sick sympathy I bought inches” boa also didn’t bite and was better liked by Kaghan’s friends than Zepher because “he was a lot more docile and him” Kaghan said Kaghan’s “I keep Zepher underfed because h’s already getting to be a problem at the length he is now” he said conZepher an strictor is beautiful in color and design his sleek skin encompassing shakes of brown white and black old-worl- “Right now defenseless” The boa lived quite a traumatic five years including such incidents as getting run over by a bike falling six feet and landing on his head and getting shut in d he’s about to shed his skin” Kaghan said “so the colors are a little dull but normally his skin is so it shiny irridescent” gets non-poiseno- the door Everyone hasn’t always almost been fond of Kaghan’s snakes “I lived with a Persian once that kicked me out because my boa constrictor got loose twice and scared the hell out Kaghan a native of Bonn Germany first became interested in collected snakes as of a child “I collected garter snakes lizards and turtles” he said “At the age of three I chased a garter snake into a bush and that started my interest in collecting snakes” “My mother never taught me to be afraid of snakes as many people are so I’m just not afraid of them” Kaghan said d Kaghan also had a boa constrictor for five years It died of pneumonia about two months ago He purchased it at a pet shop in Greenwich Village New York “I went into a pet shop saw a sick baby boa constrictor him” Kaghan said Kaghan doesn’t collect snakes any more as a hobby for “One justification he having one” explained “is to teach people to change their attitudes about killing snakes and other wild animals and to not be afraid of them” “Most people are afraid of snakes because they don’t understand them and can’t relate to them” Kaghan said “I started collecting snakes because I was fascinated by the way they moved ate and their coloring” said Kaghan “Half of the hobby was the fun of catching them” new-worl- Since becoming more and more involved “The Pleasures of Poetry” and “From Pantomime to Creative Storytelling” are two workshops scheduled on campus at Utah State University this summer Although the creative communications workshops are designed especially for educators of young children all interested persons are invited to attend The poetry sessions will be held June from 5 pm daily in the Edith Bowen Laboratory School Library This class is designed to introduce poetry to young people in a positive manner with the basic premise that poetry must be kept pleasurable if it is to be enjoyed The focus will be on strategies and techniques using oral interpretation as a basic mode for presenting poetry in an exciting way to “turn students on” The second workshop “From wildlife in attitudes collecting snakes Kaghan’s about have changed “I ’m not going to go out and catch rattlesnakes any more or buy any more” Kaghan said “As a human being I don’t have any right to keep and cage any animal” he said “There is no justification for keeping an exotic animal in your home” Kaghan stated “By buying them you support an industry that exploits those 9-- animals” “As for serious scientists doing serious teachers learn to communicate without words as a means of creative expression and to use oral expression to stir the imagination commented communication professors Farrell Black and Barbara Hales codirectors of both workshops USU Professor Ron Ross a pantomime specialist will be a guest lecturer for the latter As for advice to others interested in taking up the hobby Kaghan explained “I’m going to try and discourage people from taking any out of their natural habitat or buying any” “There are already enough of them being killed” he said who will be Kaghan in June plans on graduating selling Zepher An avid lover of animals he also owns a dog and has collected many exotic animals through photos from a trip he made to Africa workshop Participants may register for two hours of credit
