Deb long after classes had started It could be a picture of her grandmother com-fmissio- Four years ago that would have (been impossible Now that (ROTC has been reopened to women Deb has her change Soon she will be a commissioned officer in the Army Reserves I First Women Getting Women back into the program has been a slow process Soon it will be complete Next year the first women to complete ROTC will be commissioned in the United States Army or Army Reserves The idea first came about in he At office of the Director of ROTC other Affairs with Colonel Robert girlfriend’s grandmother almost anyone's grandmother The woman is wearing an Army type uniform of the early 1900’s She is standing at attention and holding a heavy rifle Debb grinned as she noticed the differences in her own uniform compared with the uniform in the picture She thought of how different the training in ROTC must have been back then In the early 1900’s the USU military department was still in the developing stages But it was required of all students male and female The woman though required to take ROTC classes had not been (allowed a commission in the United States Army for she had (been phased out of the program n (Deb now wanted that 9 commissions to women after 70 year wait Yerks Division Command 9th Infantry Forst Lewis Wash “I had difficulty getting the idea accepted but I saw no reason to keep women out of the program any longer” Yerks said They are competing with only those men going into other last spring during USU combranches of the service missioning services Once the idea was accepted it Desimone said" d was initiated at of the “To make things fair and equal universities for the first year they should allow women in Yerks said Last year the ROTC combat branches” he said program was opened to women at “Otherwise the women should be all universities offering the given separate commissions” Another discrepancy where the program women are concerned will be “I was apprehensive at first” this summer said Colonel Joe Gappa coming k A summer camp is professor of military science for of all cadets before their USU “But the girls are doing all required This will summer senior year right in the program I think they mark the first attended by camp even enjoy it” There has been no change in women Not knowing just how to handle the teaching program here this the women will be put with because of the women Gappa the for most of the training men said They participate in such Gen Sinclair Melner said Big things as rifle training and field the camp at Fort commanding manuevers on as equal basis with Lewis However he Washington the men will be there modifications says Since the women are comin weapons training and field peting for the same commissions patrols 'as the men he says the training “Another unfair advantage” has to be equal said Desimone However some of the men do As the women in USU’s not see it quite that way program they think mainly of “If commissioning is equal in the opportunities ahead of them ROTC then it should be equal in “The Army offers good pay the real Army” said Dave free medical care reduced rates Desimone cadet staff member on groceries and sundry items” “dFve --women compete for all said Gappa “But the most branches except combat arms” valuable thing the Army has to one-thir- six-wee- E Needham & Pose No Threat For the men who intend to enter branches such as armor or infantry the women pose no threat when commissioning time comes because they are barred from joining those branches Jewelers offer is two years of good exthe best education perience around” There are five women in the ROTC program at USU at this point Two of them are under contract from Utah “I guess I’m used to it” The benefits the Army has to offer today are really good Debra said And it offers great career opportunities after graduation whether a person stays in the service or returns to civilian life after a few years she said “Being in ROTC is frustrating for a girl” said one female cadet rHavHg4o' put up with "the resentful attitudes of some of the male cadets is the hardest part” Girls Talk ‘Some Resentment’ Beal a freshman from Peggy California joined the program at And there has been some the beginning of the year but resentment from some of the dropped out of it after fall men according o Peter Gold- quarter “I joined because I wanted to learn to fly” said Peggy The program offers flight training to senior cadets The women may take the course if their written test and physical meets the requirements as with the men However the women do not compete with the men on the test according to Col Ron Fish-bur- n of the military science departnent They compete with the other women across the country who take the test to determine which women will be allowed in the flight program Four will be allowed next year from a total of 73 slots The other 69 must be men “I quit because I did not like the idea of having to serve in the Army for two years after I graduated” Ms Beal said'' “I already know what I want to do after I graduate and joining the Army is not part of it” “Having been an ‘Army brat’ all my life I like the military” said Debra Nielson a freshjnan berg cadet commander At the end of each schol year ROTC gives outstanding cadet awards for each class level Last year the first and second places for the freshman class were women Goldberg says this has caused resentment toward all the women in the program “I was not even here last year and I can see how the men fell” “Personal said Goldberg I the women think aside feelings are functioning as well if not better at times as the men in the program I can’t see why they would want to do it though” The opportunities in today’s Army are very good for men and women both Gappa said The men in the program know that it is the reason many of them joined he said Women should be allowed same those op- portunities “In the past women have accepted the roles given them by society” Gappa said “I am glad that some of them are looking toi see if there is something better”' Fashion show Clothing desjgns will feature originality Cash prizes for the
