Party as nothing more than a joke or possibly an attack on student-bod- y elections However Turkey Worker candidates Mark Allred and Stanford Andrews ‘found some very interesting sidelights to their campaign Both Allred and Andrews admit that their original intentions were only semi-serio- us “But we did want to bring some added interest into the campaign in a humorous way” Allred explained “And” added Andrews “being the creative and ingenious individuals thaTwe are we decided to carry it out” And carry it out they did The Turkey Workers came out of the primaries with almost 10 percent of the entire studentbody’s approval Allred said that he had hoped that their efforts would shed some new light on this year’s campaign making it somewhat more inventive than what USU has seen in past years “If candidates can’t innovate their campaigns now” Allred said “how can we hope for them to be innovative in their offices as they represent us the student-body?- ” “Senators and congressman don’t get elected for just standing around and talking about their qualifications they bring out their elephant and their donkeys of the past 12 years and try some out of the ordinary things” Allred explained He added that if a candidate isn’t especially creative himself he should at least prove he’s a good organizer by getting people working for him that can give his campaign some originality Andrews said that the more he and Allred got into the campaign the more they realized that many of the platforms of the “serious” candidates didn’t make much more sense than their own whimsical campaign promises “What they are saying was not relevant and we decided to try to cajole them into facing the real facts by making fun of their platforms with our own farfetched ideas” Andrews said “If student government really is important then those campaigning for offices should take them more seriously” he said He added that it seemed like most candidates were getting their votes by being eloquent speakers gearing their words for the crowds and speaking out of both sides of their mouths at once “Nobody would get specific on issues flouting instead their qualifications which voters don’t care about anyway” The Turkey Workers were concerned at first because many felt that they were undermining the system and creating a negative attitude toward student government “I hope we didn’t because I still think student government is useful and has its place in serving the students” Allred said r “Our government this year and years past has proved that” He explained that the one thing that can make a real difference is student input “That is why the proposed idea of setting up a system for taking regular student poles is so attractive to me” he said “The people that are vocal aren’t necessarily representative of the main stream of the student-body- " Academic vice Funk Randy 1291 1 president: Russell Walker Hawkins Jr 1228 Dave Sands 648 Cultural vice president: Buzz Thurber 2539
