includes some good ideas but might not be entirely feasible They also agreed that planning activities is of primary importance and UC policy is second Bill Gentry Gill Gentry said that through campaigning he’s found that students are more interested in activities and not as interested in additions to the UC “Of course I’m not saying that we can’t educate them to be interested in the UC” Said Gentry “I’m in favor of more Saturday night dances Recently dances have been held in the middle of the week because so many people were leaving on weekends We need to start them right off when the freshmen first come up Then they’ll want to stick around” Gentry would like to continue dinner theatres and night clubs with some changes He’d like to have refreshments served during the entertainment and provide a more comfortable atmosphere seats in rows” than “hard-bac- k A spring festival is one of Gentry’s proposals for activites “It would take about six months organization” said Gentry “but it could be three or four days of partying to celebrate spring It could include rodeo dances concerts and sports Added Gentry “An outside concert is a possibility maybe in the ampitheatre or football stadium” Concerning the UC master plan which would add a food store bank office law office clothing store and expansion of the Harmonious Living Center Gentry said: “This plan is being brought up at a time when it’s politically expedient to do so There’s $40000 available for UC renovation and a plan that would require $200000 is being Stab-in-the-Gra- ss intr-mur- al proposed” However Frank Coats who proposed the initial plan to renovate the UC said it is ridiculous to think the plan is being brought up now for political reasons He added that there is $50000 not $40000 available and the total cost of remodeling the UC would be $93000 not $200000 “I’d be open to the ideas if they’re feasible But I don’t forsee a way to sell a low volume A of food for low prices delicatessen would be a good Students need a money-make- r where place they can grab a sandwich between classes” said Gentry “The bank would take at least two or three years to get running I know that they’re having trouble finding bidders a bank probably wouldn’t make much money here Banks have to depend on loans and students aren’t going to take out loans from a bank when they can get a loan from USU” added Gentry “I believe in the concept of a satellite U that is taking entertainment outside to the people” said Gentry This year we departmentalized programs For example Issues in Education drew 250 people because we advertised to education students Had we advertised to the whole campus 50 people would have low-intere- st come” Randy Silcox Silcox said he’d like to keep this year’s activities “on the same level or upgrade them There have been some problems in scheduling and diversification Added Silcox “I don’t know yet how I’d diversify activites but there needs to be more than just a stomp every weekend” Silcox would like to reinstate complaint boxes “It’s been tried at other times but that was when students were more interested in tearing down the ROTC building than working with student government I think they’re more interested now” Silcox feels that social activities is his main job “When a bill comes up I’ll look at it but I’m not going to stand by the library and ask peple what they think about the grading system My job is to get people out of the house to meet other people” Continued Silcox “I’m psyched with this year’s programs When I see what’s going on at other campuses I’m glad I go to school Brady and Mohseni give views to voters here No other university has a Free U set up the way ours is Many don’t have one at all” Through talking to students while campaigning Silcox has found that the main concern is getting an education “But the students also want convenient services The UC master plan has some good ideas Getting a bank to come here might be tough but we could use it Students have to take taxi cabs hitchhike or walk downtown to a bank” Continued Silcox “I don’t know wheather a market would make money We have to appease downtown we can’t undersell them Perhaps we could sell 1 percent above downtown Added Silcox “A possibility is that the market could be owned by the all right to lose money” Concerning expansion of the UC then it would be Harmonious Center Living Silcox said “I think we need to bring in something that might serve more students and make more money so that we could expand into other areas” Silcox said that he is totally tuition raise against an “Education should be a right and a privilege Some students wouldn’t be able to go to school if tuition was raised And they don’t want to take the risk of getting into debt” in-sta- te Added Silcox “Campaign promises are a bunch of hooey I can’t guarantee that I can make changes I can only guarantee that I’ll try” Frank Coats writer of the UC master plan said “Claims that bringing out the UC master plan was politically expedient at this time is ridiculous We have not released the plan yet We went out of our way to wait until elections are over” Continued Coats “The entire renovation will cost $93000 An architectural firm from Salt Lake has made the estimate We have the money to pay for it this is an year plan” 8-- Coats believes that the food store is feasible Students could order bulk items for school “USU is a land-grawhich means we can buy food from the federal government We can run down to Hill Field for d food Our biggest stumbling block is obtaining a low-pric- es nt low-price- cold-stora- truck” ge Added Coates “Kay Freeman head of food services has said ‘We can plug this sytem in at any For Experience 1 4 i - P 1 ' ' I - HASS ‘L f - Arman Mohseni is seeking the office of Executive VP “because it is the one most directly related to students and their concerns” “I’ve been on this campus for three years and the same problems are still here” he said He explained that the problem lies in a majority of the students being careless about student activities and government “I believe that I can ask for the student support necessary to make a difference if I can first show them that some of these problems can be solved” Mohseni said He pledged that if elected a major goal of his would be to get off of the third floor and talk to students wherever they happen to be and find out what they want and what they don’t want Mohseni said that he would particularly like to investigate prices of many of the supplies in the bookstore in comparison to prices in downtown stores “As p student-suppobusiness I think the bookstore has the obligation to at least keep their prices even with downtown prices if they can’t see a way clear to offer Doug Brady I’m 100 per cent behind the programs that have been established within the office this year” he said These are namely the legal aid job placement and consumer protection services for students “I can’t take credit for establishing these programs Brady said “but they’ve been incorporated into the office and they’re just waiting for action Brady said that his proposal of conducting student polls to find out what the studentbody wants is becoming more all the time realistic ' “I’ve talked with Nolan Johnson incumbent about the budget for the office and it is very likely that we would be tuition able to offer an a to capable scholarship student who has the know-hoto head a committee in carrying out such polls” he said Speaking of the funding of activities sponsored by special interest groups Brady said’ in-sta- te w rt that student government needs to take into con- sideration the needs of the entire studentbody “I think its fine to help a minority group sponsor an activity if its informative and a large number of students can benefit” he said “The polling system that I hope to get set up would help let us know which of 4hese activities would and would not be of interest to the majority of the students” Brady said his background with the greeks the LDSSA Student Productions and the Rodeo Club would give him an advantage in being able to represent and involve a large n of the campus “This would be especially helpful to me in selecting committees- - and assigning committee chairmen which are key responsibilities assigned to the office of executive vp” he said Brady also said that through some personal experiences he has found some situations related with the traffic department to be “grossly discounts" He said the best solution to the problem would be to make the administration aware by approaching them with exact facts and figures from in' vestigations” to Mohseni said he would like explore the possibilities of making the library reserve larger with at least two copies of every textbook on reserve for students who can’t afford to buy books He also made particular to mention teacher evaluations and the free-universi- “I strongly support the free university but it could still be improved with some even more relevant courses” he said He also stated that he hopes we never see a repeat of what happened to four faculty members this year “Two of them had faculty evaluations that were quite favorable” he said Mohensi has been involved with student government for the past two years as president of the Iranian Student Association and of the unfair” “I would at least like to let students know some of the problems that exist and what they can do about them” he said “There are a lot of students who aren’t even aware of the traffic appeals
