Show Page 6 1 March 14 1975 Page 8 by phil frank FRANKLY SPEAKING SS Students should have a voice in education £ COLLEGE MEDIA With finals and Spring Break coming up most students are gearing up for a week of hectic study then another of vacation before starting the same old grind once again But hopefully during the times ahead students will not lose sight of some efforts which have taken place this quarter One such effort is that of the Students for a Relevant Education (SRE) which is attempting to gain student support for increasing the input students have in University Student Life supports the efforts of the SRE and students who have the same philosophy that students have the maturity and right to have a say in their educational experience The time has long past when school administrations could dictate the directions of an institution such as Utah State University As an institu-tionoeducation all universities should operate the principle of democracy with all involved to some degree concerning the direction and educational quality With Spring Quarter just around the bend Student Life praises the SRE members and supporters for their work and appeals to them to continue for the good of all students when April rolls around Students have a chance to finally voice their ideas This opportunity shouldn't be thrown away cm other s7 mp tybe ca use ‘OTrequarter eircfe-crnbegins Student Government: It could work by Eric W De Haan policy-makin- g T policy-makin- g d Richard Brady Student Life Staff The phenomenon called “student government” is an interesting study in human success and failure As has been said several times on this pag£ our ability to govern ourselves and our efforts to improve the student’s lot aren’t all they are cracked up to be But they do exist The system of bureaucracy and committees here at USU is an inefficient unresponsive machine But it could work if we ever really wanted it to There are student representatives providing student input at virtually every level of administration from appeal boards to the faculty senate from housing to parking from campus planning to grading policies But who hears about the -ytxrdentrepresentattves Many of the students don’t attend meetings aren’t familiar with the processes the powers and the limitations of the various The and bodies thankless Herculean task of trying to organize and inform the student representatives belongs to the Executive Vice President com-mittee- es who this year is Nolan Johnson There are big problems facing students trying to enter the process of administration Time and money are limiting factors committee as are to seem who chairmen delight in about students agendas confusing and meeting times But in spite of this stacked-carsituation we can enter in if w want to We can provide input into nearly every adminstrative “ivy-covered- -’ d decision The fact of the matter however is that we haven’t flexed the Aggie student muscle erroughr The cause and the result of this situation is that we no longer care |
