Show Friday February 7 1975 Page 9 by Dayne Goodwin Viewpoint Mayall excuses Editor Student Life: Editor Student Life: After reading the editorial written by Sue Hodgson I felt it my responsibility to bring to light some of the situations that Sue apparently misunderstood The sound system hired to do the show experienced trucking difficulties between Seattle and Logan and was unable to make it here I was informed of this late Wednesday morning and began looking for a replacement Fortunately we found one but due to a combination of short notice and required travel time the system didn’t arrive until 6:00 pm more than four hours later than the usual time allowed for set up Our sound crew all of whom had waited three hours did an amazingly rapid job of setting up the sound system which requires much effort and care We were lucky to even have a system for the show The reason we started the concert at 8:30 was due to the steady flow of people still entering the Spectrum until that time Concerning the police I believe “that government is best which governs least” but conduct at past concerts warrants policing I’m faced with the dilemna of either the “cops or the Carpenters” for each concert The house lights were raised slightly not for the specific purpose of “checking student activity” but to facilitate the movement in and out of the Spectrum by a large number of patrons who chose not to remain in their seats Already the University is being sued concerning a mishap which occured at another Spectrum event Walking up and down stairs in the dark is difficult in the best of conditions The editorial How far away is Boston? He's perfect was an un- of Mike Ballif my stage and sound manager and the people that work for him by refering to them necessary criticism as “gross indications of unprofessionalism” Granted they are only students but the time and effort these” people spend in doing the best they can should not be rewarded by the type of editorial that appeared in the paper Richard Snyder John Mayall’s manager was amazed at the ability and speed with which the system was set up and to use his words “Your people did a good job setting up I can’t believe we actually will start on time” I suggest that in the future Ms Hodgson might research the entire story concerning the problems that seemed apparent Providing some accurate information instead of shooting from the hip'about the concert set up might provide a useful service and indicate to the students that Student Life is striving for “professionalism” also Buzz Thurber Cultural VP 520-58-78- 23 Re: Sue Hodgson editorial Feb 3 1975 It will be been in a position where I felt my performance lacking on any of the above points: I therefore consider myself a professional quality performer I feel that any person casting stones of unprofessionalism should at least be in a position to make that statement Mark A Nyman 521-92-93- 16 (Eds Note: In my experience as an apprentice professional I have of ten been in a position where I “Speak-Ou- t Against Racism” The Speak-Ou- t focused on the situation in Boston and the national importance of the effort to desegregate the Boston school system Over one hundred students — attended the Speak-Ou- t which isn’t bad for USU Many others wondered why people in Logan should care about what happens in Boston Boston is presently the national focus of the struggle equal rights and opportunities Racists in the Boston area have mobilized to prevent implementation of the desegregation plan They have been aided and enracists by couraged throughout the country — everyone from the Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan to the President of the United States Of course Gerald Ford and many others who oppose Boston school desegregation would deny that they are racists They are simply for “neighborhood schools” or against “forced busing” In our society the vast majority of Blacks live in urban areas in fact they are concentrated in central city slums known as “ghettos” Many Americans became familiar with the word “ghetto” only recently The Civil Rights movement and the massive urban riots introduced white Americans to the facts of Black existence in this society Now that we know that most Black people are trapped into ghettoes by low incomes perpetual unemployment and racist housing segregation it should not be too difficult to understand what is meant by fcrr those who are for “neighborhood schools” or against “forced busing” Theyare for keeping Blacks “in their place” — on the bottom “There can be no equal education without transportation” says Jonathan n Kozol writer on education and author of a book about Boston’s segregated school system (Death At An Early Age) Dick Gregory got to the root of the problem with even fewer words: “It’s not the bus it’s us” well-know- has a sizable white community in the central city Less than 20 percent of The racists in Boston don’t' have much ground to stand on because some white students from South Boston have been bused to two special high schools (a trade school and a college-pre- p school) for many years The nearest high school to the Black community of Columbia Point is South Boston High — but the racists of South Boston don’t want Blacks from Columbia Point to attend their neighborhood school Racist whites are even boycotting their own neighborhood schools because they now have black students There is no question that being “for neighborhood schools’ and “against forced busing” is a cover for racist to equal opposition educational opportunity And if Gerald Ford is just against forced busing let him explain to us how he goes about Boston’s population is Black So now Boston is the scene of white racist terror In 1975 Boston is the center of the tension between racist forces in this and Little Rock as country just 1957 in Racists was the country are throughout side of the the to rallying anti-raci- Boston racists They are encouraged by any success of the racists in Boston Those who are against racism must mobilize in support of the Boston Black community’s struggle for We television last quarter The Speak-Ou- t to publicize a national helped march against racism that was held in Boston on Twelve December 14th thousand people particpated in the demonostration It was larger than any of the racist demonostrations and helped to prove that the racists don’t own the streets of Boston The struggle against racism is not over in Boston or in the US of A A National Student Conference Against Racism is going to be held in Boston February 6 It will plan the next actions in defense of the rights of the oppressed Black The national minority Student Committee Against Racism here at USU is raising funds and organizing to send representation to the National Conference 14-1- racially
