The final official results of the first Student Life plebiscite The subject of the unscientific survey was the quality of education The first question was: Are you satisfied with the quality of education you receive at USU? Of eight responses five said no while three said they did approve of USU's education The second question: Do you think the university gives adequateattention to the educational needs of students? MO-- - Again five said no and three said yes The third question asked what areas of education at USU should be upgraded One respondant said: "The library needs expansion not '' only of its collections but also of its hours and programs "The art department attitudes maintain a high quality program with a fine art outlook Yet the entire department lacks adequate staff and facilities Also it receives a lesser proportion of funding than other areas at USU yet it is an equally valid educational pursuit" said another respondant The fourth question was: What areas of education at USU 4 are outstanding? One person wrote: "I feel that the football basketball etc are outstanding areas in so much that the university seems to put a lot of funds into this" Another person said research agriculture and the biological sciences are outstanding at USU One criticism of the plebiscite was that the second question dealing with the educational needs of students was misleading "There is always room for improvement and therefore in a strict sense the answer is 'No'" the person said "But I think the university is doing a pretty good job overall" Another comment was: "Only the teachers and students in mutual effort make any educational endeavor worthwhile USU takes pride in fields such as agriculture natural resources engineering while ignoring the needs of other areas Also the administration makes their decisions in the best interests of students without first hearing their opinion" Anyway those were some of the opinions by the eight respondents to the plebiscite It isn't very representative but at least eight people thought enough to express some of their thoughts on USU's education Join a conference Editor Student Life: for one am getting pretty tired of reading articles telling why USU sports attendance is falling off because people have found other interests The blame is not the spectators but the school’s reluctance to gain admission to a conference Even the Big Sky Conference which some say would be a step backwards is better than no step at all To those of us who have been to a major college conference game the enthusiasm and attendance are far superior to the Billy football and Graham revival-lik- e basketball games that are the rule not the exception at USU Athletic Director Ladell Anderson tells us that the athletic events are not drawing the gate receipts he would like but counts on games like the humiliating football game with Oklahoma to bring money into the athletic I was Jesus Christ There are three possible ways of dealing with Him: 1 accept Him 2 reject Him 3 ignore Him Perhaps the easiest thing to do would be to ignore Him If you honestly However claims His death His examine I think it would resurrection and be hard to ignore Him To reject Him would be the worst thing you could do since He claimed to be God There will come a time when every man shall come before the judgment seat of God and how will you feel then after you have rejected Him and His love? To accept Him with your whole heart is the only plausable thing to do Only then can you experience the love He has for you When you accept Him He forgets about all the years that you have ignored and rejected Him The choice has been left up to you It should be very obvious that nor enthusiasm would hurt by being a member of any conference Very few independent teams ever obtain national recognition or don’t have strained budgets like USU I doubt very seriously if USU will ever achieve the prominance of a Notre Dame or Marquette so lets do something A change is drastically needed A local radio station reported Saturday that the USU Athletic Department has no intentions of joining any conference but the Western Athletic Conference Have a good wait because I doubt seriously if WAC coaches want to admit a team as good as 496-58-67- Freedom for all Editor Student Life: editorial you unfair to the stated that “it Utahns who are nonmembers of the LDS Church to take stands on In your Jan 17 is POLITICAL issues” Our constitution guarantees any individual or group the right and freedom to form an opinion and to voice it if so inclined This is exactly what the LDS Church has done They have not told the state legislators how to vote on the ERA they have merely stated USU how they feel about this issue Saying that this is “unfair” is Dave Fuhrmeister saying that free speech is unfair Does our eaUorreally mean this? A religion represents a set of values held in common by a group of people Many of the Jesus saves decisions they make are based upon their religious values Many Life: political questions also involve Editor Student value decisions Therefore in a I recently submitted a letter to question such as that of the ERA the editor about a man who was where values are involved the Church and it’s philosophy are hated and yet he loved However I didn’t really answer the automatically involved so it is taken a question how do you deal with good that they have stand Perhaps it would also be such a man? The man I was talking about good if newspapers would state 479-62-86- before stating their political positions so that we as readers can know How to accept them Also stated in the editorial was the fact that “nearly all” members of the Utah Legislature are members of the LDS Church So are “nearly all” (a majority) of the voters in this state I certainly hope that our legislators reflect in their votes the values of the constituents they represent Let us all hope that our freedom of speech is preserved and not limited only to journalists John Payne 528-76-98- Anti-ER- A Editor Student Life: Bill Wolfe fund neither attendance their values clearly In your editorial of Jan 17 you condemned the LDS Church for having taken a stand on a POLITICAL issue Because as you stated it could effect the outcome of the purposed ERA and would therefor be unfair to the Utahns who are not members of the Mormon Church you ever stopped to consider what is the purpose of the Mormon Church? The Church is headed by a Prophet whose calling it is to receive revelation for the membership of the Church If after having received such revelations he were unable to communicate it to the body of the Church because of political implications as you suggest it would not only be unfair to the membership of the Church it would also be a direct violation of their religious freedoms Have ' also stated that it is the all to support the duty the ideals for which it ERA and stands Yet when you consider the emphasis the LDS culture has put on the family as the basic You of us building block of society and you refer to wives and mothers as and opinionless housekeepers their roles in society as being suppressive it should be clear to you why I cannot support your ideals or the ERA Orvid Zollinger 528-78-49- IM t i I f f lit 1 1 l T |
