of the happenings of the day is to bring out the hard-to-ge- t facts and make critical evaluations One area which the press is guaranteed freedom from restrictions and censorship on responsible reporting is the workings of government And in this area of reporting the press and governing bodies have run into controversy and conflict Thomas Jefferson was one public official who was harrassed constantly by a vigorous and often irresponsible press But Jefferson saw that the need for an independent arm of public servants to take into account the daily informational needs of the people and to keep a close watch on the three formal branches of a democratic government The chain of events brought about since the Washington Post's reporting of the Watergate break in should show that such activities is a responsibility which the press has in seeing that the citizens have objective and accurate information In past years at USU there have been sprinklings of efforts to point up different opinions on controversial subjects The efforts of past studentbody officers and candidates who tried to work through that way the efforts of past Student Life staffs to bring out information on various aspects of the campus community not to mention the efforts of individual students In the college press this has come out usually as some form of criticism of the student government administration athletic department or a host of other decision-maker- s Such criticisms are an important part of any or a professional newspaper whether it be student-run operation If those who make decisions have made the best choice then such criticisms will not crumble the status quo but strengthen it This type of criticism will not cause the institutions to come toppling down or jeopardize the direction of anyone But hopefully they will serve to stimulate the informed and the opinionated to express their views in a free market-placfor ideas the marketplace being the " mass media During the past Fall Quarter this newspaper's staff came under almost constant harassment from the USU Administration the USU Institutional Council the ASUSU Executive Council and the newspaper's own would make the following the comments regarding distribution and sale publication We like to of the blue book First there does appear to be a good deal of imformation found within the covers of the blue book It is however questionable as to whether or not that information should be sold to the students when the majority of it is already available through other publications (which in many cases are free for the taking) We are referring here to such items as: social calenders athletic calenders the hours of various concessions 12 pages of fraternity-sororit- ©COLLEGE MEDIA CA SERVICES-BO- confusion as far as friends go the only thing being constant is the confusion Friends come and go for various reasons so fast that it is difficult to tell where they all might be at one The a constant struggle almost everyone’s life and one with which we are never satisfied The decisions we make daily are decided by one or the other of these two Goldmund represents the emotion the heart Sensuous handsome and indulgent he is drawn inextricably to the life of the road of a wanderer Narcissus stays in the cloister pursuing his scholarly aims and eventually becomes the in It is no longer feasible or possible to cultivate the closed groups of friends as one did in high school and it is a fortunate thing for it is at this '“tfirrp that we learn ce nt y and and gain to with how deal time learning and ourselves Always in times when I have not known what was going on or I was looking for “the answer” I have eventually wandered into the bookstore and headed for Hermann Hesse Barricading myself for a couple of days with one of his books I eventually find the center of the earth again and right the wrongs or some of them in my mind My latest expedition in that direction netted for me “Narcissus and Goldmund” the story of two friends who and were totally opposite who because of what Hesse has chosen each to represent lead totally separate lives Yet each was a true friend to the other throughout their time though years pass without each seeing the other Narcissus is a monk in a medieval cloister and a brilliant scholar in Greek and Latin Goldmund comes to be— a student in the cloister by order of his father and becomes friends with Narcissus for there are but a few years between them Goldmund admires Narcissus tremendously for his scholarly achievements but Narcissus years of their separation Goldmund never forgets Narcissus and is true to him though he is not to his Christian upbringing He attempts to become an artist and though he has a great deal of talent he cannot settle himself to the security of such a life Narcissus is secure and waits the years in prayer and services for the return of his friend Though I’m sure there are many more hidden messages in the book than this that is what I treasure most about it — the friendship of two totally opposite people who could and did remain true to each other and whose love for each other never wavered throughout many years of wandering from this Refreshed will be a good it discovery time when this message is internalized and realized all who have had friends depart in various directions even from this school Friendship is a thing — it formation about us? We certainly did not We strongly feel that some serious legal questions arise by the publication and sale of the blue book Because some of the information contained in the blue book could have only come from university records we would like to inquire as to which office opened supposedly confidential records for public review One can easily reason that as a direct result of the publication of the blue book our privacy has been invaded In turn we can expect to be subjected to junk mail and annoying phone calls Junk mail that might be directed at a particular sex in the form of military recruiting whereas annoying phone calls might originate from the eager beaver insurance salesman who is trying to corner the market in graduating seniors Personally we feel that we should have a choice in determining who knows where we live what we’re studying and what class we’re in It is our considered opinion that further sales of this year’s blue book should be halted and that in the future each student should be given the choice as to whether or not that student’s name will appear in the publication If a student should choose so then that student most also be allowed to decided what if any additional information will appear in the publication Because we consider this matter to be very serious we to see or hear would the university from responses and the Blue Key as to why we should not pursue through legal channels to have furthi r sales of the blue book stopped ii they are not stopped voluntarily CA Stante 203-38-20- strange RW Fuller willingly gathers total love yet demands that one in- 048-48-80- maintain a separate S Q identity The “take” means you mold it to yourself to fit your needs the “give” means that you send it back out again Cannon 566-80-41- JM Daniels 530-32-98- your way unselfishly J X i uU |
