| Show rage z Paae 4 Wednesday Nov 13 1974 A cheap shot Editor Student Life: In this column of Nov 4 there Student Life was written in a very contradictory bigoted and biased manner The author stated at the end of his letter that “It’s pur- bust” in Richards Hall The writer of that letter not only got his-hfacts wrong but used that opening to attack the Mormon Church I am no great lover of this local organization but at the same time I do not believe in cheap shot tactics I do believe that there are some basic questions that need to be believe what they feel most comfortable believing To infringe ones own beliefs on another as to overshadow them is hopelessly wrong” We agree that people do have the right to believe what they want but feel that throughout your letter you totally contradicted yourself and did not support this last statement in the least To begin with you state “That girl had no right to ‘squeal’” She had a lot more right to “squeal” than those students had to be smoking marijuana You said that these student’s private rights had been infringed upon It is against the law in the US to smoke is It also marijuana against campus laws at USU to smoke anything in any public buildings on campus These laws were made to protect other peoples rights By smoking marijuana in Richards Hall these students were infringing on the rights of others If it was their “private business” to smoke marijuana then they should have smoked it somewhere where it was private not somewhere where they were bound to be detected The next ridiculous thing you say is “Mormon logic seems to be that anything that- does not conform to strict Mormun rules is wrong” We already pointed out above that it is a National Law that prohibits the use of appeared a letter attempting to relate what happened at a “drug er asked The writer of the aforementioned letter had a e reasonable question when discussed the problems of blacks in the church As many questions as I have he-sh- about this singularly unique religion there is one in par- ticular As I understand my history a very important part of the creation of this country was that there would be a separation of the “Church” and the “State” This was done to avoid the persecution that the colonists had come to despise in England With this as a basis why is that the separation in this state requires a microscope to find it? Finally I wish to state that I consider it for chicken-shi- t someone to write a letter and then not sign their name Kevin W Burke 150-36-99- 87 (name not withheld by request) Bigoted and biased pose is to show that people - Editor Student Life: We feel that the letter entitled “Busted” in the Nov 4 issue of Searching for a way to Get Involved? ilSChild Development Day oC Care Center Needs Volunteers You also say that a Mormon marijuana and it has nothing to do with “Mormon logic” would be afraid to “spew at the If you would reread your letter mouth” in areas besides Utah you would see that in paragraph yet here you are “spewing at the after paragraph you contradicted mouth” and contradicting yourself and made absolutely yourself again by withholding For your name after expressing your claims unwarranted think it’s If you example: “just views What are you afraid of? fine and Dandy” if Mormons Towards the last you say “The believe what they want to why do whole point of this letter is not to and totally rip apart the Mormon you call them for “bigoted” Religion” It seems there was just being little else done in your letter A Viewpoint vw is 4 Mr Brady and other members of the studentbody who choose to use the paper as a vehicle for attack Rather I would encourage you to simply ignore the attack and move forward in an attempt to improve individual relationships with both LDS S and alike the editor Apparently enjoys the controversy caused by this kind of approach An interesting paradox to me is that Mr Brady seems adamant that church and state be separated He finds it unacceptable to have the church influence the state or but has no university hesitation to use state facilities and money to attack and influence the church All this really does is to make the gulf between the various factions on campus even wider During the past few years while attending this school I have felt strongly that the gulf that has seamed to separate the people has actually lessened and there has been a big effort on the part of many fine people on both sides to begin dialoge and conversation to relax the non-LD- and rigidity non-LD- S I - con- tradictory bigoted and biased and that you ought to put a little more logic and sense in your next letter to the editor Roslyn Stevens 528-84-57- 00 Signe Ward 528-92-04- 41 Paula Palmer 519-66-22- By Mike Morgan An LDS Position I would like to address the LDS students on campus and others who may be in disagreement with the effort of the paper to criticize the LDS religion I want to encourage you to not respond to X X That your letter was “non-modern- ’’ misun- derstanding I have witnessed personally some very fine cooperation among all groups I see in our volunteer programs both LDS d and working in an effort to help young kids and those with emotional problems I see in student government a large mixture Apply at Activity Center or contact the VOlCE Office We could go on and on but we feel the point has been made: I now of all kinds of students enjoying the relationships they’re having with each other of in an atmosphere I see in even cooperation Student Life the same thing happening and I feel we have moved much further ahead in this interaction than at any time in the past It was not until the last few weeks that I see again an attempt to broaden that gulf and to develop mistrusts and misunderstanding as the two groups begin to fight openly in the paper once again Wouldn’t it be a fine thing if Student Life would editorialize and provide ideas that would allow these various groups to come together for an exchange of ideas and to become better acquainted and more tolerant Most generally you find it hard to dislike a person once you get to know him and instead of broadening the gap by allowing and encouraging anti-LD- S information and vice versa to come forth in the paper how much more useful it would be if the paper were to be used in a positive way My comment is simply that if you are going to use a hammer you ought to use it to build your own self a house and not to tear someone else’s down And so I would say to you the LDS students and others who feel the same way that we should not attempt to continue the fibht by cussing Mr Brady or Mr DeHann or others who have already convinced themselves that LDS people are bigots and unresponsive and unfriendly Let them have those feelings In some individual cases their impressions are true Let’s have the majority of us group together and reach out and have an exchange with people of all religions and nations and forget the fight that the editor would like us to have He’s not going to change any minds one way or another personally hold no grudge against Mr Brady Mr DeHann or Mr "‘Name Withheld by Request’ They have their right to speak I’d recommend to them a psychology class that talks about why and how people and groups change behavior and it certainly doesn’t happen when they’re ridiculed in I public Change comes about when persons are approached in- dividually and have their errors pointed out so that they can change in that same way suspect that bigotry unfriendliness and unresponsiveness are not reserved for LDS people only We all might need a little changing How much more important and useful it would be if Mr Brady would find occasion to bring together individually and in groups students of all kinds for an exchange of ideas and criticism I’m going to do just that I PRE HOLIDAY SALE hand-in-han- Thurs thru Sat OFF on select groups of Guys DOUBLE KNIT SLACKS SWEATERS FASHION SHIRTS GALS SPORTSWEAR A group of pants Tops and sweaters Vi FELT’S 114 N Main fi EUSEIM' f' I X ' i W' h f i ?
