Show Friday Nov 8 1974 USU Indian Council gives sense of unity by Steven Pugmire staff reporter does the average American Indian fare at USU? “Generally quite well” How Blaine Hoyt president of the USU Indian Council says “Of course there is much to improve politically and socially The Indian Council has been organized to help the Native American students and to give a sense of unity” '’The Indian Council is the local organization established to aid all Indian students attending school in Logan Although it is independent it is part of a loosely organized body of students that is spread out among all the colleges and universities in the state of Utah “As of yet we aren’t organizq“e point of being a reallfiective state-wid- e group” said onHoyt “The the social emphasis is rather than the political right now The social aspect is of course important but in the future I hope we can concentrate a bit more on political matters We hope to have better communication among the groups in all the Utah schools” year there are ap70 Indian proximately students at USU Basically This they share the same problems that try all university students Currently there is one problem that stands out “We are very disappointed with the question of tuition and other financial affairs” stated Hoyt “There was a bill in the Utah Legislature last year that proposed that tuition or totally be reduced for Native eliminated American students but it was not passed This is still a rather vital question for us The University hasn’t given enor much help couragement” The officers of the council for the current 'school year are: Blane Hoyt president a Turtle Mt Chippewa Lindsey a Manning Shoshone-Paiut- e Elizabeth Conway?secretary a Paiute Vivian Powaukee treasurer a Ute and Armand vice-preside- nt sergeant-at-arm- s a Ute “The next few years will bring many changes” says Hoyt “With the council’s help we hope to be prepared socially politically financially” Blue Goose to perform and Page 5 state convention held todau and tomorrow AWS by Chris Mark for Student Life The State Convention of the Associated Women Students will be held today and tomorrow with the Utah State Chapter sponsoring it Representatives from every college and university in Utah totaling around 50 and all women from Utah State are invited Jo attend Numerous activities are planned for this convention as follows : possible solutions are hoped to be obtained This will take place in the Continuing Education Center Saturday: The days activities will begin with a one hour session for everyone covering the in- tercollegiate association of women students Regional Vice President Kalleen Butters from Weber State College will give that session in hopes to get everyone excited for the National Convention which the USU chapter will be hosting at Hotel Utah from March 0 Friday night: There will be a show and tell 0 there will be From where session the different three one hour workshops each show will their run twice The topics and colleges activities speakers will be: Organizational organizations Problems will be shared and Coordination -
