Show Monday Nov 4 1974 St3 M&s Editor Student Life: Recently some students from Richard’s Hall were arrested for possession of marijuana They had been smoking it in their room Although they were breaking the law (arid I am not condoning this) they were not bothering anyone The story goes that a Mormon girl had smelled the smoke and had gone to the head resident to make a request that some action be taken Thus the police arrived and arrested those involved The point however is not that they were breaking the law but that their private rights had been infringed upon Not their right to smoke pot but their right to privacy That girl had no right to “squeal” on anyone’s private business The Mormon logic seems to be that anything that does not conform to strict Mormon rules is wrong That girl evidently felt she was doing those arrested a “favor” By turning them in she helped them to “see the light” and helped clean up her virgin community This is just one of the many things that Mormons have done to show their influence It ap- pears that the Mormons are very is ironic (which ty considering that they themselves are a minority) There have been instances of slanderous signs posted on non— Mormon residents’ doors telling them to go back where they came from — it was signed: Mormons from Utah I have heard from many people about the discrimination of blacks in the Mormon empire If one delves into the Mormon history it will be found that blacks cannot even attain a high rank in the Mormon church because of their color Personally I don’t know of any blacks that would care to attain this great honor anyway am also sick of hearing about Mormon religion is one of the fastest growing religions in the world Maybe in Utah it is where the population rate is highest among Mormons If the Mormon religion is so righteous then why is it that the majority of its followers are isolated to one of the most desolate states of the union? Why is it that they were repeatedly pushed from state to state until they&eached Utah? If these sometimes bigoted Mormons do not stop pushing their views on an otherwise fair society then I see nothing but trouble ahead I think its just fine and dandy if the Mormons want to continue to believe whatever beliefs they I how the non-mode- rn Viewpoint A modest counter proposal want to just as Catholics Jews and Protestants do But the minute they start professing the granduer of their religion over other religions is when they are going to have to back themselves Busted! anti-minori- Page 3 up that they would get it their through puritan heads that there is not one right religion Everyone is different — what belief works well for one person does not necessarily mean it will work well for another It is a lot easier for a Mormon to spew off at the mouth about his religion in Utah but put that same person in a varied society as found on the east and west coasts and their whole foundation will fall apart Its no wonder they were all kicked out of New York Illinois and God knows where I wish else! The whole point of this letter is not to totally rip apart the Mormon religion Its purpose is to show that people believe what by Michael Christiansen and David Eskelsen Mr Dayne Goodwin’s “Ford says: Bite the Bullet” Viewpoint article of Oct 16 prompts me to make this reply: I have read few articles with as many exaggerations and misleading statements To start with Mr Goodwin asserts “the federal government spends most of our tax dollars on ‘bullets’” and he compares the “already much too small Health- - Education and Welfare budget” with the “enormous Pentagon budget” The government spends over 50 percent of toal making billions of dollars in profits” Millions not billions To put this into perspective consider that Standard Oil makes about two cents profit per gallon of gasoline they sell while the government takes eleven cents Fortunately we have some common ground I certainly agree that the Arabs and their oil is not the main cause of our current inflation I also agree that governmental deficit spending though not the “basic cause” of inflation is certainly a major contributor our Unfortunately our money supply by printing extra money at the rate of 59 percent annually At last check the rate was up to 96 percent Unfortunately over the past year partly due to the energy situation our economy has suffered a slight decrease in production as opposed to a usual 4 percent increase With a moderate increase in the money supply and a corresponding increase in production there is no reason 3-- for significant inflation Conversely an accelerated increase in the money supply coupled with a drop in production or available goods and services inflation must result Simply put the dollar value of available goods and services is directly related to the number of dollars in the system My suggestion to President Ford for his campaign against inflation is this: Have the Treasury Department cut the growth rate of the money -supply by 1 percent every 6 months until it reaches 3 percent This would bring inflation down to negligible proportions by 1977 We don’t revenues for Healt Education agreement stops here His solutions for inflation and and Welfare while the Penof federal the share tagon’s unemployment have ab15 less is than solutely no economic basis for percent budget they feel most comfortable consideration revenues for Health believing To “infringe” ones I can think of no better way and Education while Welfare beliefs on another as to overto the of the instigate a 30 percent plus Pentagon’s share shadow them is hopelessly rate than Mr inflation is federal 15 less than budget wrong Goodwin’s suggestion of percent (name withheld by request) 33 Furthermore he states percent more paying 25 been has business people percent more “Big Needs space 33 percentHws-wor- k do to the for record money profits making Dear Editor Administration last several years” “Overall Faculty and other people: The basic cause of our inthe big industrial and finanAre you a janitor who has a flation is rooted in the Federal cial corporations have never broom closet that is super-delux- e more had it so good” Reserve System really just another area that you need scapegoats or conthe Treasury since the great Never specifically don’t want to clean? fiscatory taxation Department One year ago just depression has business been I am a graduate art student the Treasury was increasing rational monetary policies in such deep trouble One who badly needs some studio indicator the stock market "space (preferably large with a has fallen over 40 percent in door electricity heating and STUDENT LIFE it the official student publication of Utah State University and is less than one and a half years written and edited by students I am nearby running water) Then he complains about EDITORIAL POLICY is solely the responsibility of the editorial staff The editor can will someone read that hoping reserve the right to refuse any publication at his discretion “these oil companies who are this in Student Life and perhaps EDITORIAL OPINIONS are solely those of the editorial board and those writers with come forward with some sort of Services (Student Life October signed articles LETTER POLICY The editor reserves the right to edit refuse or print any letter All sheltered area — a big loft? a fab 30 1974) I feel very disappointed line and signed with name and student number left vs must be typed on a and disheartened that the student basement?
