Show Wednesday Sept 25 1974 Peg® 17 Stars begin training camp By Allan I7a!!:cr The primary purpose of this initial Wasted Words column is to introduce myself to those of you who will be subjected to following Utah State sports through my writings It will also give me a chance to state my philosophy on how big time college sports should be handled Let me begin by stating that I am an astute follower of Cosellian sports journalism While I do not agree with Mr Cosell on many points I do agree with him that sports is much much more than who won or who lost scores or statistics To me and to Howard the human element of sports is all to often lost in the superficiality of data which in the long run will prove meaningless What I intend to do and what my writers hopefully will do so also is to play up the human elements of the sporting life without which sports would not exist Whether or not you agree with this philosophy is for the most part a matter of priorities Afterall are statistics more important than the individuals make them? For me statistics rank a distant second Ultimately it is my hope that when you take in a competitive sporting event be it individual or team you will view it humanely who View it with the knowledge that the participants are people just like you and me With the same problems ambitions goals and frustrations as you and I If even one of you adopts this type of outlook on sports then indeed my words will not have been wasted will be football team 11-- 0 2 7-- have already We played two games winning both on the road At Wyoming we played a tough game It was brutal physical game with both teams hitting for blood The Aggies were fortunate to escape with only one injury a broken jaw to Junior flanker Paul Paul will miss the Tippets remainder of the season with his jaw wired for nine weeks — One Wyoming punt in the first half served as the best example as to how the game went AsXhe ball was snapped to the Wyoming kicker Joe Marion Ag safety Pete Lavarato broke through the Cowboy blocking only abruptly stopped by the Gaines to up-bac- suggestions from anyone who has anything to say In fact if I don’t start receiving feedback from you readers I may begin to feel more insecure than I do now be k Temperature in Laramie was degrees The wind was from the north at three miles per hour The two teams line up for the opening kickoff and Wyoming’s Joe Marion puts the ball into the 58 end zone That’s how it started the 1974 season for the Utah State football team For that day it was all downhill The Aggies defeated Wyoming 17-- 7 behind the record breaking performance of Louie Giammona and the defense held up against a very physical cowboy team All in all it was a good show The Aggies didn’t look all that fancy "but who does on the first game of the year Now they’ve defeating played two games BYU 6 this past weekend So maybe we can take a look at how the season is going to turn out The team plays nationally-ranke- d Oklahoma this weekend Enough said about that Then after a week off to recover from the week before Indian New Mexico in an charge Over the Labor Day weekend the first US Open Golf Tournament was held in Monticello Utah It was the first organized golf tournament solely for Indian golfers and the winner Dennis Banks a Mandan Indian from Bismark North Dakota termed the tournament a tremendous success “It was better than any of us thought it would be” Banks said “It was very encouraging and highly surprising that there were so many Indians involved I had All-Indi- an error-ridde- nament representing 38 different tribes They came primarily from the intermountain states Banks hopes that the Monticello tournament is only the beginning and that more Indians will be turned on to golf via these tournaments A second all Indian golf tournament has already been planned for San Diego in October “What we eventually hope to do with these tournaments is produce college scholarships for young upcoming Indian golfers” Banks said “There has not been for Indian done enough youngsters in these types of areas We hope to change all that” There is only one golf course located on an Indian reservation and that one was the result of a mistake x “When they built the course the developers did not realize that they were doing so on a reservation” Banks said “It is one of the few times that Indians have benefited from a mistake” Banks United assistant director of Tribes Employment Traning Center the only Indian owned and operated vocational training center in the US began his golfing career as a caddy for his older brother “I hated it but I needed the money” he said “I didn’t really play the game until I joined the Air Force and it was then that I fell in love with the game” n d an 9-- 27-1- Walker Bank is offering you a great book with ho plot A Walker Bank Personal Plan Checkbook is probably the handiest book you could have Your money is safe and the monthly itemized statements help you keep track of where your money's going There's no minimum balance to maintain and you pay just 10 on each check actually drawn on your account It sure beats fumbling with cash And keep in mind that we welcome student savings accounts too A Walker Bank Personal Checkbook can help you all the way right up to graduation day It doesn't have much of a plot but it can help you to a happy ending!
