We must make ourselves known We are compelled As men we cannot allow this inhumanity” They called friends and friends called friends They made plans They gathered before the office where men decided who stays and who goes They called to their draft board: “We refuse to go The injustice must end No one may cross our line” to They shouted “No one may go war” The police came ten rows ten men in a row each with a heavy black jacket and helmet each wearing gas masks and carrying clubs seemed inThey surmountable The order must be preserved To this end they were determined The confrontation was brief Gas was fired into the crowd Some skulls were crushed some noses were smashed some people were taken to jail The depot was cleared the soldiers crossed the line The war How alone he was now! The returned surging for a moment reaching a climax He pain held himself The next day screams of death stagnated the thoughts of the captured dissidents The ground lay covered with dead bodies while agonized and contorted men lay bleeding Some who had lost the back of their head lay face down in a crimson pool of blood People were being bustled into cars and wagons The stain of death left no one untouched again they were numbers Their gathered must war The overwhelming end they persisted Radio and TV reported the state would not stand for disorder and injustice The National Guard was called The demonstration he comThe pain subsided in the night manded must be stopped When the smoke cleared and He remembered when he was a the gas had dissipated in the boy secure with his father and night the air was pregnant with mother He cried He prayed He sirens and shouting men The died And the war goes on Sewer bram causes bossies Logan’s main sewer pipe under the parking lot across from the HPER building was severed causing water to be turned off throughout the upper portion of the campus Monday between 7 pm and early Tuesday morning Campus security noticed Monday morning that the sidewalk and lawn had sunk nearly two feet Crews checked the problem and found the manhole in the street was three feet lower than usual which in turn blocked the pipe below Tunnels under the HPER building were filled with sewage and had to be pumped Val Peterson director of the Physical Plant said Drinking fountains in handball courts began flowing with sewage and so water was turned off he said Peterson said the only way to get rid of the sewage was to flush it through outside gut- ters “The gutters were later flushed and disinfected” he said City and campus crews worked through the night to correct the problem A local contractor was brought in which made the “large gapping hole” Peterson said “Logan City cooperated to get the problem solved quickly which the University appreciated greatly” he said Y Y f? Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y X PRESIDENT TODAY IY Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y y t $ 1 2 Dr Cyrus McKell Program Photo by Tony Collii director of the Environment is involved in projects development and Man to study future energy Environment Man Program studies new energy sources by Tim Gerrister “The strength of the USU Environment and Man Program is that it is able to work with all the different university disciplines in its program’ says Cyrus McKell director of the program The program started about 3 M2 years ago It was formed in response to a need felt by many students and staff to get involved It provides a mechanism for involvement by way of sponsoring research projects community action projects and direct education These are such things as studying and area evaluating it then providing opinions for improvement or growth Providing the facts about a situation before the action takes place is perhaps the program’s most vital function The program is currently involved with a $20000 grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to conduct a feasibility study on energy resources development This is headed by McKell and Barry Crawford The program also did work towards gaining visibility on land use planning in this state Another project was research which lead to the formation of the Cache Valley Solid Waste Disposal Program Headed by Norm Jones and Bob Gearhart this research led to the system which replaced a dozen or more community dumps which had occasional open burning Totally the Environment and Man Program is responsible for 45 such projects over its life span many also forming task forces which are still working on their respective projects Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y OSH studies fceart conditions Y The head of Utah State’s program in Cache Valley to take Y Human Performance Lab would electrocardiagrams (EKG’s) on like to insure the junior rand all junior and senior high school Y senior high school students of the students Y state have a heart record or at of their hearts a least record Members of the Performance Y Dr of the Nalder head Lab recently competed taking Y lab at Lanny USU hopes to answer that blood pressure and EKG on the question With a grant from the College of Education’s Bureau of Research Service Dr Nalder and his assistants have begun a Registered foreign students only Student Activity Cord Required 3 Voting at Foreign Student Office Main 101 Monday 10 am to 4 pm Y students at South Cache Junior High They will do other junior highs and high schools in the upcoming weeks |
