Show Monday April 29 1974 Page 7 Professor of the Year candidates announced Five USU professors have been nominated by a committee of students and faculty for the honor of Professor of the Year The final choice for the annual award 'will be announced at Robins Awards May 4 at 8 FAC pm USU for years He earned both bachelor’s and doctoral degrees at BYU Before coming to USU in the Society Peterson a 20th century US history and black studies buff has been with the Department of History and Geography since 1971 He is a graduate of USU Dramatics His education continued at Columbia University Teachers College in New York Stanford University in California and the Los University of California with a PhD from Washington State University Angeles He was given a Doctor Campus involvement Education degree at UCLA in 1961 His campus involvement extends to Faculty Senate Publications Board the Council on Teacher Education and the General Education Council He was a finalist for the national Awarded Citations Ballam has been awarded numerous citations for excellence in the fields of teaching and research He has been principle investigator that have brought thousand in An- derson served one year as a research chemist with the Texaco Research Center in New York and as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oregon for the National Institute of Health He has membership in various scientific organizations including the American Association for the Advancement of Science Sigma Xi and the American Chemical The nominees are Oral L Ballam Richard C Anderson F Ross Peterson Bonnie Spillman and Allen W Stokes Ballam dean of the College of Education since 1969 has been at USU since 1963 as a faculty member He is a graduate of USU in English and later earned a Master’s degree in Speech and of 11 Frederick Jackson Turner Award for a book by a new author on American history Ms Spillman is completing her first year of teaching at USU She quickly caught the attention of her students and colleagues for grants several dollars to USU from federal agencies His community involvement encompasses Srouting and city s government He has been mayor since 1966 Anderson an organic chemist in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has been at some rather untraditional teaching techniques The com- Smith-field’- munications theory specialist turns a handicap blindness into a plus when she meets her classes Besides teaching duties Ms Spillman is the director of forensics on campus and her debate team qualified' this year for the National Novice Debate Tournament at Northwestern University She was nominated for the Business and Professional Woman of the year for this area and has accepted invitations to judge several speaking contests on campus holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Western Washington State College and a PhD from the University of Utah Stokes has been on the USU She Wildlife Resources staff since 1952 and has brought international Department of recognition to the school for his work in animal behavior He believes that an understanding of animal behavior greatly enriches a person’s understanding of animal world and especially of his relations with his fellow man A member of the Society of Friends and believer in nonviolence Stokes has taught an honors course entitled “On Aggression” an exploration of the possibilities of understanding and controlling aggression in man and lower animals He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Haverford College received his MA in chemistry from Harvard and a PhD in wildlife management and zoology from the University of Wisconsin He spent a year at Cambridge University in 1958 under a National Science Foundation CANDIDATES FOR USU professor of the year are standing from left Richard Anderson and Ross Peterson and sitting Oral Ballam and Bonnie Spillman Allen W Stokes was not present Senior Postdoctoral Fellowship Other Robins Awards nominees are for Scholar of the Year: Ivan Ron Pedersen Thomas Don Singleton Jonathan H Bley Christine Erni Joanne Conrad Robert L Harris Douglas Karl Lemon and Julie Zufelt Talent of the Year nominees Tandra Schultz Jones Myrlynn Jorgensen Gary are Mary Haws Molton and JoAnn Vincent Gerrish Jim Boatwright Dave Manning John Price Mark Enyeart and Archie Gibson have been nominated for Athlete of the Year TAB COMMSTTi N THE ART: tX 1 r IUM' i 1 St - ANNUAL iATIVi COMPETITIONS IN THE AREAS OF: PHOTOGRAPHY ART-PAINTIN- G BLACK & WHITE CREATIVE WRITING POETRY FICTION run Liu “ COLOR MUSIC COMPOSITION raw J uuL Deadlines — May 1 - May 3 Further information and specific rules may be picked up at UC activities on third floor UC y |
