Show Friday April 26 1974 Page o n 1 1 1 Applications taken Oj0m±F by Lynn Lanier each position that the process of searching for an athlete could be sports staff what turned out to be a rather cold grey and miserable like afternoon gladiators for battle the 1974 preparing USU Aggies kicked off their spring football season last weekend Despite the weather conditions more than 86 prospects including turned for out Saturday’s practice session For the past six weeks prior to Saturday’s practice the Aggies have been going through a rigorous training schedule of prespring conditioning When asked for an overall evaluaiion of the team before last week’s practice coach Krueger said “We did an excellent job in the workouts to improve our strength and speed I’m quite pleased as it appears at the raW talent that we have for an excellent football team” “Our prime concern in spring football is that the “raw talent” now evolves into a cohesive unit both offensively and defensively” Krueger said Coach Krueger took over the job of former head coach Chuck Mills last year and is now going into his second season as the Utags pilot after finishing the season last year with a rather impressive record of “The number one thing we have to come out of spring football with is as a team we have to have confidence in each other in terms of playing ability” Krueger said Coach Krudg£r added that he felt there was enough depth at off-seas- 7-- developed at the end of spring football Krueger is planning to bring in 18 freshmen in the fall with hopes of supplying help if it is needed On opening day of spring football there were numerous pro scouts in search for professional eliminated On lettermen for The Aggies showed last year that they had a very formidable wall of blockers which was displayed extremely well by the running attack of backs like Jerry Cox Louie Giammona and Archie Gibson who incidently gained over 1000 yards last season However coach stated Krueger “Specifically on the offense we must develop an offensive line equal to or better than last year’s But we have a lot of replacing to do although we have veteran performers some of them are making position moves like changing from tackle to guard and that type of thing” “It is going to be difficult to replace veterans like Wayne Cuncic and Dave Manning who had a lot of seasons on the line and both were excellent technicians” Krueger said In terms of the offensive back-fiel- d for next season the Aggies have a veteran backfield which will be tested by a host of talented running backs and should prove to be very interesting After the team has been prospects Of the 26 teams in both the NFL and AFL there were representatives from the Denver Broncos Atlanta Falcons Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins just to mention a few Although the scouts are only viewing senior players USU has five players who are high on the pro scouts list Among the five players are Bob Fuhriman John Hatley Larry Comadena A1 Knapp and John Segreti The interesting feature of spring football will be the presence of professional athletes who coach Krueger has coached in the past The players will be coming in at interval times during the spring to work with the Aggie athletes Charlie will also be on hand during the course of the workouts John Grant who also was an at USC and now 1974-7- 5 WIA playing with the Denver Broncos will be in during the third week of practice Former USU quarterback Bill Munson will be at USU for a few days to work with the coaches and players “I think by having these individuals come in will give us a little lift in spring practice” Krueger said The Aggies will hold its first scrimmage session this Saturday afternoon at Romney Stadium positions Applications are now being taken for WIA officers for the 1974-7- 5 school year Girls interested in being on the women’s intramural council should pick up applications in the intramural office 128 HPER building Offices are intramural manager independent league manager dorm and branch manager and sorority league manager publicity and secretary plications are due May 10 Ap- an Weaver at the University of All-Americ- an Southern California who is now with the Detroit Lions of the NFL um’ i in 4 5 Due to many requests "The Sting" play 5 more days wil !
