Show Monday April 22 1974 Page 4 Tate gives views on Black politics Housing rates may reflect wage increase get but since we didn’t know the amount to request we were refused” Broadbent said Since the money to raise wages was not in the new budget the money will probably have to be appropriated by the legislature Broadbent said that ‘‘If an appropriation is made by the by Dennis Frantzen senior w riter Dee Broadbent A vice-preside- nt for business affairs said Friday that housing and board rates may be adjusted to make up for the increase in the minimum wage The room and board adjustment will be in addition to the recent increase that was approved by the Institutional Council and the Board of Regents “USU will only have to pay 85 percent of the new minimum students that wage to are employed by the university” Broadbent said the university Although full-tim- e anticipated minimum appear in a nation-wid- e pay hike it didn’t the recently approved budget "We asked them (the Board of the State and Legislature) to act on this and let us add the increase into the bud Regents legislature it will only go to state supported programs--no- t services like the food services” bookstore and ‘‘They have to generate their own revenue” Broadbent said To make up for the increase in university-ru- n minimum wages services such as the university print services the bookstore and others will Ise their rates have to Broadbent said that on May 1 the university will have to up their minimum wage to 85 percent of the federal guidelines “It’s actually $162 per hour but we’ll probably even it out to $165” said Broadbent If the proposed plan goes ahead as scheduled the school will be paying a minimum hourly wage of $170 by January 1 1975 $190 by January 1 1976 and $200 by January 1 1977 Broadbent said that one of the main problems in formulating a plan for the minimum wage is to term define the student” ‘‘full-tim- e “It used to be defined as 90 hours of work per month but now we’re going to 20 hours of work per week by students employed by the university” Broadbent said The compromise bill (HR 2747) allows institutions of higher education to employ their fulltime students at 85 percent of the published minimum wage as possible “It’s a training experience and it provides students with jobs” the state of Colorado one of which is a woman “Throughout our history on this Broadbent said “We could just as easily hire “but this (Compromise) bill allows us to hire students at a little lower than the federal minimum wage” Broadbent went on to say that it is less productive to have a student come in two hours at a time to work than to have a fulltime person come in and put in a straight eight hours “We want to give the students a chajice to make some money” Sat -
