Show Page April 10 1974 16 Utah State opens diamond season with 9-- 3 win Thinclads set for first dual meet Aggies face Utah on Saturday With two four-scho- ol meets behind them the Aggies travel to Salt Lake City Saturday to challenge the University of Utah in their first dual meet of the outdoor season Field events will get under way at noon Track events begin at 2 pm Adding up the strengths and weaknesses of both teams Saturday’s meet appears to have nip and tuck qualities In the BYU invitational two weeks ago Utah collected 56 points to USU’s 51 points Here is the event by event rundown POLE VAULT: Jeff Marston is the lone Aggie entrant Mar-stonbest indoor mark was 15’ In last Saturday’s meet he again ’s QQOOQQOOQQ ® Wed Nite o O KELLY SINGS g O £ O O g o g Thurs Nite JAZZ NITE © at the BISTRO g ooooooooou went 15’ Expected to reach 15’ 6” by the end of the season Marston should have a real battle with Utah’s Jay Bowdler who went 15’ 6” in indoor ‘ SHOT PUT competition AND DISCUS: “We should have no trouble there” said USU track coach Ralph Maughan when asked about the shot put and discus events Steve Blake had his best toss ever last to win that Saturday 56’ 7 event easily It is possible that Blake will challenge Mike Mercer’s school record (60’ 1”) this spring JAVELIN: Aggies have not shown their potential in this event to date Steve Alley took second in the BYU Invitational but didn’t place last Saturday Reed McGregor had a 190’ 5” toss last Saturday but he can do better LONG JUMP AND TRIPLE JUMP: Barry Lines has to be the favorite in these events Lines took first in both events last weekend with jumps under his best indoor marks In the BYU Invitational Lines took second in both events finishing ahead of all Utah contenders STEEPLECHASE: Utah’s Jeff Schnell and Tom Takach should win the 3000 meter exercise in punishment easily Schnell and Takach share the Ute school record with a time of 9:073 MILE RUN: The mile run was a disappointment for the Aggies last Saturday Rick Ward and Steve Reinhart have been USU's strong contenders in this event Ward and Reinhart have placed in both outdoor- -
