Show Page March 15 1974 2 2 editorial comment JW- 5- Sisters shouldn't spat editorial in the Salt Lake Tribune said the University ot Utah is "sick and tired of raising tuition only to see the new money go into the overall' higher education pot for distribution to other schools" The Institutional Council of that school is asking the State Board of Regents to develop "ground rules" covering tuition charges at the public colleges and universities The Tribune editorial urged that the state guarantee the tuition collected at one state school for the exclusive use of that school and that the Legislature provide sufficient funds for each school to operate without sapping the "financial vigor of the largest unit" We agree that the Legislature should provide the funds necessary to maintain full operation of each of the public colleges and universities It didn't do that this least in the case of USU This year's apyear-- at propriation left the school's administrators scratching for funds to maintain present programs We're concerned about the divisive attitude expressed in the Tribune editorial As it summed up "In short the University of Utah has carried its weak sisters long enough" This deflects the blame for the U's financial problems from the Legislature where it belongs to the smaller public schools in the state The state's colleges and universities share the same - they need money Pushing and shoving each other to get that money will only add to the problem Ken Kefauver of Kennecott Copper said this state's greatest resource is not copper or steel or oil but higher education There are about 74000 students or 6 percent of Utah's population enrolled in either colleges or vocational schools and about 7000 of these graduate problem- each year This would indicate that the state has a great responsibility to protect the resource of higher education The state's public schools also have a responsibility to make sure the state protects them They should do this in an organized united way The state is forcing the schools to raise tuitions by reducing its appropriations to them Protests from the schools should be lodged against the state not against each other Teacher's view Athletic funds A Wednesday Dear Students Dear Editor: LaDell Anderson has turned the clock back in more ways than the addition of a training table After having read “Farmers Contribute to Training Table” (Student Life March 13) and seeing the amount of money that is poured into athletic coffers by student fees state donations allocations and gate receipts we feel that athletics at Utah State is becoming too monetarily minded So much money already exists in the present program that Mr Anderson is not justified in harrassing the community of rural Cache County More money is put in without a corresponding increase in athletic excellence It seems to us that athletics is moving from a means of obtaining an education to a business designed to support coaches and funnel a BIG 1 percent of the players into the Added money in the program goes directly to the coaches and players and the benefits are never seen by the students or community The farmers gain absolutely nothing from their pro-leagu- es obligated contributions other than to be able to pay their $4 per game like everyone else to see USU play second class teams who also have to travel in order to play Its time we turn the clock forward and athletics moves on donations Fees receipts allocation where will it end? Robert H Simpson — 478-64-46- 26 most unique young people went to our universities We are shocked to hear of this streaking fad Our young people look to you as examples Are you really thinking? I’m a fifth grade teacher Our first news reports have been on streaking and they chuckle and poke at each other Do you really want our little ones doing what you’re doing? We try to teach them that their bodies are sacred things and should be kept clean and cared for properly not exposed and laughed at Please start to set examples for our generation good-prop- Sincerely Ruby Parker a concerned teacher er younger the for future Gross misuse Student Life Editor: I’m glad Brent Harker came through with his editorial on Communication I hope he along with 528-80-96- 520-68-25- 529-82-94- and 518-60-61- 528-76-11- will their statements in Student Life on “Streaking” If their statements aren’t generalizations and “inferential leaping” (jumping to conclusions) what is?
