Show July 23 1973 Page 2 editorial comment Review Mismanagement ‘My Three Angels’ The headline of the New York news paper read: ‘Almost Unvelievable’ Were they discussing the Cambodian conflict or the Watergate affair? No they reporting on tne latest developments concerning USU’s 4''4 investment program The Massena New York paper called the investment program one of the saddest missuses of public funds it had ever heard of Like the Watergate affair the more authorities try to cover-u- p the investment program incident the more the bad news gets around Like a giant snowball gathering speed as it rolls down a hill the investment program incident speeds out of control in search of someone to pin the blame on David MonsonUtah State Auditor reported recently that losses from the program could surpass 4 million He said that the poorly managed program was fed with federal funds grants and student tuition Donald Catron former university investment officer allegedly falsified reports on the programs progress and used public funds to ‘gamble’ in the stock market It was announced last week that Catron is facing 13 counts of public funds mismanagement with a possible penality of 1 to 5 years imprisonment for each of the 13 ill-fam- O ed felonious counts Detrimental effects of the investment jjy LeAnn Ols0n by LeAnn Olsen Sometimes there is a play written which is good enough that the actors can’t hurt it too badly In my mind a play like “Death of a Salesman” is one of these One can just read the play and get a lot out of it At other times a play or the actual action moments of a play are only made poignant or meaningful because of an actor’s ability One such play is “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” This play although much less serious than the other two mentioned is well written for clever comedy (almost melodrama) Additionally the actors do a good job Originally done as an old “Bogey” film “My Three Angels” was delightful then and is still The story happens when three prisoners spend Christmas with an unassuming and very trusting family g Aside from a little by the young lovers of the play the acting served to benefit the play The prisoners a sophisticated “Three Stooges” played by Jack Southwick James Armstrong and Jerry Allen made the play with snake antics and private smirks to program scandal are numerousand making the headlines of the nations largest newspapers Besides the problems concerned with the apparent loss of funds the credability of the university has been badly shaken if not destroyed If Utah State university officials can do nothing to regain this lost confidence in USU’s credability a diploma from Utah State will have less value than the American dollar now commands on most foreign markets over-actin- the audience An interesting switch occurs in the story when the prisoners two being murderers actually whip the household into shape by doing good deeds hence “My Three Angels” Like most things in little Logan the Lyric and its Barry Willis Editor productions have been criticized for being smalltown and therefore not quality For those who share this belief I suggest that they take the proberbial head out and start enjoying the summer plays that the Lyric offers Finally in reference to this particular production if one is seeking a philosophical piece of heavy theatrics “My Three Angels” won’t make it But if you are interested in having an enjoyable night of laughter in Logan then go see it Water Safety Anyone interested in taking (or renewing) WSI-wat- er safety instructor’s course please notify the HPER Department office 122 in HPEH Bldg or call ext 7222 and leave name address and telephone number In order to add the class to the summer schedule there must be a minimum 6f 10 people sign-u- p (Lifesaving fa CfruThlt - v vr-’-- " jr '''fa tLs Vw V i w I a ’ i a PE r 461 is a prerequisite) HW-WW'- X- - jo fA X- X- - ' STUDENT LIFE STAFF X- X- - I - t £m 4U’ftk vVr?
