Show I April 25 9 1 973 Pago 3 9-I I and many departmental budgets are quite 1 Editor Student Life Editor Student Life no i I I Rugby is one hell of a rough sport! This statement was quite common among the spectators who witnessed the USU rugby game April 11th As a past student and rugby player at USU I am pleased to note that the rugby team is learning to play a quality game This can be attributed to the hard work of their coach and 26 eager players desiring to learn a truly fine sport Butthe students at USU are not adding to the quality of the play when they come to a rugby game such as on April 11 attempting to cheer the contestants to sadistic acts reminiscent of the days of the gladiators Admittedly the referee let the game become a little rough due to a lack of control on his part such as not calling some late tackles and misconduct But this is not the point Rugby is a sport en- joyed throughout the world because it is a game of finesse respect and sportsmanship (the most forgotten term) It is a game which you can play during a major portion of your life and gain from it both physically and intellectually So let’s reserve the “bloodthirsty desires” for American ( T football and come to the next home rugby game not expecting blood and guts but some fine athletes playing football the way most of the world knows it ! Try it you’ll like it ! ! ! i William R Terrill USU alumnus ( ( Your editorial on April 20 1973 General the concerning Education program needs some comment say the General Education funding proposal is not First Secondly it was so “slyly” scheduled that Mr Martin who inadequate for providing quality has nothing to do with LDSSA undergraduate programs Under found out about it as apparently such conditions any increase in did Blane Hoyt All this aside the key to all of general education expenditures Mr Martin’s troubles is exseems highly questionable Finally your editorial in- plained in the first sentence of the dicated general faculty support fifth paragraph “If I had perI for the program as reflected by sonally gone to the LDSSA ” is the Senate dicision It my imagine From then on the points made observation particularly in the College of Science that the on both sides are purely faculty is somewhat less than speculative and fabricated from enthusiastics about the program Mr Martin’s vivid imagination and I think if a vote was taken which has never fully recovered now in the Senate the results from the heatless night he spent This in the Capitol Theatre might be different In the future Mr Martin it disillusionment in the sciences is due to a general feeling that at would only be fair to your readers least in its present form the to label your column as conGeneral Education program is jecture in the lead and we can detrimental to the academic then view it accordingly quality of the University Rather than correcting the faults of the old system it may in fact result Steve Brown in a lowering of the general education level of our graduates federal funding $ for General Ed Rugby finesse I you an attempt to “bureaucratize the program into a general education the Perhaps not-- at out moment It must be pointed however that the proposal does in fact increase the bureaucracy college” since it removes the Coordinator from half time teaching during e the academic year for e administration adds a assistant coordinator (for the first three years of the program) and increases the present secretarial staff of the Coordinator’s office Second you imply that no adthe funds from ditional inbe would Jack T Spence University budget In of Chemistry not true Professor volved This is simply on the a recent hearing program the coordinator said additional funds from the University budget of about $65000 a year for four Another man’s view years will be necessary Now this is not a large sum it is however appreciable and during this time Editor Student Life: of serious financial difficulty it is of considerable importance By the University According to John Martin (One comparison the Views - SL Man’s the for coming Library budget of LDSSA has “slyly” scheduled the a number that is such year are Lamanite Generation to perform journal “subscriptions scheduled to be cancelled The on campus causing conflict with IndianWeek $65000 a year increase in General It should be pointed out that Education would go a long ways Some according to the schedule of to preventing this Indian Week there is nothing departments are in serious scheduled 0 their of pm the graduate losing danger 24 of of loss of because April evening programs ’full-tim- full-tim- -- 528-84-88- Generation visited the USU campus last year The adoption of an attitude of service to all with a respect for individual rights and ideas would prove beneficial to everyone 7e understand this" to be the motivation behind programs of the LDS Church Garth Balls 518-64-91- 35 Dee Whittier 529-68-90- 92 Editor’s note: Mr Martin’s column was run under the heading “One Man’s View” It was not the official viewpoint of Student Life nor should it be interpreted as such The clumn was satire and should be evaluated In that light Lamanite appreciation Editor Student Life: We would like to respond to the editorial “Lamanite Conflict” published in Student Life on April 20th as follows: -- for-6:3- preciation for Indian culture and insight into the aspirations of Indian youth when the Lamanite We only regret that Mr Martin was not able to have personally visited with a representative of the LDSSA in reality Had he done so many misunderstandings and hard feelings might have bJen avoided on both sides He would have learned that a capacity audience gained ap Letters and suggestions to the editor and the Student Life staff are welcome The letters should n line on a be triple-space- d and signed with the type-writte- 60-spa- ce sender’s name and student number Names may be withheld upon the sender's request but the student numbers must be included The staff reserves the right to edit or print letters oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o 1 I I i 4 r a ( if i I ' o o o o o o o o JO o o o o o o o o o o o K0823 o o o oo r a ' w ll i n i J e mil o o o o o o 0 o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o 0 o o o o 0 o |
