Show April 20 1973 Page 9 Costume making: painstaking process by Susan Arrington Senior writer Anyone who has attended the productions of the Utah State Theater Department has seen the work of one of the finest costume departments in this area Headed Perkes Sid Jy renowned for his set and costume creativity the costume depart- ment has developed a fine exreputation in this area for costume in production cellence When musical productions such as the recent “1776” are put on by the department an estimated 50 costumes which is the product of a painstaking process beginning with historical research and sketches and ending with the final trim being sewn on Assisting Perkes in this monumental task are Mrs Hatch wardrobe mistress and construction supervisor Colin Johnson assistant set designer and Pat Falardeau assistant wardrobe mistress In addition to these people eight USU students are employed - on work study programs to sew the costumes each of are made week for at least four weeks to complete the construction” storage room which contains costumes dating back since the university has existed contains elaborate coats robes and dresses from such productions as “King Lear” “Volpone” and “Oliver” Some shows add as many as 100 costumes to that storage room Many are reused several times with alternations A Perkes brings with him to Utah d State the title of of all trades” “jack well-earne- The process of costume production for any given theatrical performance begins according to Perkes with a study of the script to determine demands of the show A character chart is drawn up in which the number of characters in the show and numbers of costume changes is calculated Professer Perkes then begins historical research in which he uses paintings portraits and costume books from that particular period of time to determine type of dress Details such as zippers button hples and lace-type- s are carefully heeded Since getting his BA here at USU Sid Perkes has been the costume designer for over 50 productions at Utah State Edgewood College University of Oklahoma University of Illinois and Madison Children’s Theater He recently received his MA at tiUniversity of Illinois Seamstresses prepare costumes for the coming theatre pro- duction DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO o His experience at having been the set designer for over 40 productions paid off last year when he won first place in the National n Scene sponsored by the United States Institute of Theater Design-Competitio- Technologists Through discussion of the performance with the director Perkes determines the style of show to be produced and then draws detailed sketches and small painting in which he Perkes has directed several productions including the recent play “Effects of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds” and played numerous roles in productions during his college designs the costumes to be used These sketches are very detailed career at USU and are used to see how the costume for each character is to Along with costume designing be constructed Perkes also designs make-u- p for the show and has constructed with Fabric is then bought puppets masks wigs and of color numerous props for theatrical careful consideration ' schemes in corelation with the performances The curtain opens tonight on lighting to be used and "set to be constructed— r - - - RoherjLBolt’s8:00“AJtfanin FAH Seasons” at pm the Fac -- on the amount of yrork put into this pre- comments Perkes Perkes left head of the costume department puts final touches on a costume Sid for "A Man For all Sea- - construction process by stating that “between three and four hundred hours of work are put into the costumes before they are even cut out After we begin sewing them it takes 10 peoplea ASorVit hours a - dav t six davs vo wui 10 Theatre Tickets Students are 8100 Little for g JGSSG UUUSAKGR O COLLEGE OF SCIENCE ° Volunteers Vice President Experience Leadership Enthusiasm D’s Bridgerland Apartments 23 u::ns au hew Coo Ccrli3 to Slsdsct eSr-- 2 c t faisllbi OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOt Top off conservation week with PAY fcrsdiy 6t!
