Show November 15 1972 £ editorial comment 4 i Letters to the Editor Advising Advising was one of the key issues of last year’s ASUSU general election What is the problem with advising at USU and what is being done to solve it? One problem seems to be that few students or advisers really know what an adviser should do There are certain clerical hassels that each student has to go through to register for classes to pay fees or to receive a diploma Although seemingly insignificant these duties can mean the difference between graduating in June or August in some cases or securing a spot on a class list in other cases A good number of advisers do nothing more than this but a study at the University of Oklahoma has shown that on their own students can handle these housekeeping duties as well or better than without advisers The clerical end of advising hardly seems to fill the advising gap Advisers out to be friends They ought to help a student iron out meaning from academic confusion They ought to give him a vision of what he will be doing professionally when he graduates When there are hassels an adviser ought to help fight the battles Some advisers are doing this now Others are a long way from it They don’t have time because they have too many advisees They don’t care because they are not rewarded for advising In terms of tenure evaluation teaching is important and so is research Advising is not If you don’t publish you perish If you don’t advise you can still survive Some advisers simply do not know answers to student problems and are therefore unable to give him advice In spite of the fact that the new general education r program has been in effect for over a year now some advisers are still leading student in tune with the old group-fille- r plan Presently a subcommittee of the General Education Committee is studying advising Hie committee is headed by Dr Allen Kartchner of the college of business Suggestions for improvement in advising can be directed to Prof Kartchner at ext 7983 Con Kimura the ASUSU academic vice president is also on the committee He can field your comments and complaints at ext 7644 Transcript clarification Editor Student Life: This letter is in answer to the letter written by two graduate concerning students (SL the policy of “Academic Bankruptcy" as proposed by the ASUSU Academic Board Apparently these two students not take the time to in- vestigate the proposal any further than what was reported in Student Life and therefore it is necessary to clarify a few points First of all let me state the rationale behind such a program bankruptcy” which is the policy whereby a student may have one entire quarter’s grades dropped from his per- manent transcript is established for basically three types of students: 1) The student who came to the University as a freshman but because of lack of maturity did poorly his first year dropped out joined the service or whatever and returned to the campus two years later ready to settle down to academic life and then did well 2) The student who was sick or had financial troubles one quarter and hence that quar- ter’s grades are not typical of his abilities 3) Students with other problems concerning a quarter’s grades he-ne- eds students know a student’s cumulative GPA is an important factor taken into consideration by any prospective employer Is it fair to the student to have one quarter’s bad grades haunt him wherever he applies for a job? If these grades are not typical of what the student can really do then the transcript is no longer an “index of a person’s ability and motivation in each area he has studied" It should also be mentioned that this privilege will not be left to the discretion of the student alone It will be a decision reached jointly with and ap- proved by the dean or his representative of the student’s editor According to Dean George Wilson of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Indiana where “academic bankruptcy" is now in a two-yeexperimental stage the program is workingyery successfully and so far they are very satisfied with it Since last Spring 125 ar students Editor Student Life: It is so seldom that I hear of a newspaper that prints favorable news that I am enclosing my check for $10 as payment in advance for a subscription to your paper We at City Hall sincerely preciate your article recognizing the current policy of the police department to be helpful and cooperative with Utah State University students It is our d ap-di- desire to solve problems instead of creating tension and we preciate being informed publicly that the police department are adhering to that policy An example of another problem we have tried to solve was to paint the curb white on 8th East because we could not find anyone who had a logical answer as to why parking should be prohibited on both sides of this street We also occasionally receive complaints from students living as to substandard conditions of their apartments In order to protect the students the if off-camp- us city adopted Uniform the Housing Code published by the International Conference of Building Officials If students are unable to suade their landlord’s to correct substandard conditions they are per-speci- al urged to contact our health s ficer or gyr building inspector so that we can take appropriate of-A- I am sure most graduate Doug Anderson City's hoip have received the benefits of this program We are not trying to abolish “the entire grading and tran- script system" here at USU We are only trying to make it a more fair and accurate indicator of the student’s capabilities 4 4 corrective action The current city commission recognize the student population as a group having special needs and hopefully we can cooperate in making your life in Logan a pleasant experience Ted S Perry Mayor Logan City Foreign (honks Editor Student Life November 4 the 1972 LDSSA (Latter DeySCat Student Association) put on an pressive activity — trying to im-colle- ge explain and get foreign students and American Indians acquainted with the Church To my knowledge no one has to the group for said thank-yo- u the effort No matter what we think about each other the effort is commendable and laudable I am sure some questions have been answered and explanations given to the others On behalf of the invitees who accepted the invitation I say thank-yo- u for that nice program The movie “Man’s search fdF" Happiness’ is enjoyable to watch Here is hoping for more such gatherings bttematiMial 4i Sandhi LimtHangkgl nNrtaiwmiit 4: Jody Bumott op inion idikf Lucia Thames qporti aditor Mica fofchao aatvra odMor: Wlnono editorial asst: Jedeone Albright Don Peterson ASUSU Academic Board flaws odBor: Brant Hariwr onvbonmont ad: Bill Davis art editor: Colleen BHsy staff editor: Pat Bsiaidy photo editor: Tom CaswaB I Dawuda Gowon 585-44-12- 77 Tony CoCh photo asst: Richard Albriit Senior Writers Keith Bromley Dayne Goodwin David Griffith Undo '9 '9 Gary Iverson aiwMlLLa VWPnNI we f !' i i rl'l : l a l jh Sh M tlt v |
