Show 2 The editorial comment poor teacher EDITORS NOTE: This Is the fourth an final installment of a series on modern education by a graduate Doug Soderstrom student at USU His views do not necessarily comply with those of STUDENT LIFE) Dy Dscj Ssdsrstma gyadil CdssaHst Campus ‘cop-out- In conclusion this writer feels that the instructor (the one who acts as a helpful guide and attempts to facilitate meanfccfal ?’ Well it’s official The Logan cops are going to take over The only formality left is a vote by tbs Institutional Council who authorized the negotiations originally I for one cm dismayed at the lack of responsibility learning experiences) should look upon his chosen vocational the most noble of causes and perceive himself as the servant of his noble master the student In essence then these are the great problems which education has to deal with It will be no easy task to straighten out this condition It will take time effort and much courage on ths part of that the administration has exercised in this maneuver for this change have been under consideration The for many months Why didn’t the students of Utah State know about it? The most logical answer to this question is that the administration probably anticipated the negative attitude that is now forming across campus The administration knew that if these plans were made public the students would not be in favor of it so they waited until approval was almost certain before disclosing the education 1 Society must stop forcing its young people to think in terms of college There are many other possibilities such as vocational school apprenticeship military service maybe only for a few) a simple job which one likes etc for themselves Society (all of us) must stop telling (coercing) young people to go to college This will in the long run improve the educational experience for ministrators r ly more responsible Better methods of financing need to be developed in order to enable colleges to improve the 1 quality1 of "the learning experience A great step forward would be to base financing more “ I h well It seems that a lodctjS essentially choose betn educating many in a — ' manner or a few quite welft! writer sees neither altert£hn the only answer However is quite obvious that v n educating many in the manner the need seems to life the area of enabling thst rts desire it a more learning experience Thrift the writer suggests tzX q public educational move in the direction of more of an individual tgymAli learning and that we emtoca institutions soley devoted b individual education 5 Instructors should be ext willing to spend more date tii Ctj : students Why should a t£kd college instructor be aUe to pt paid from $13000 to $140 (hr I and spend only tbi hours of classroom time frith tbi months) student? Nobody knows for sure but from the reactions that Student Life has received not many students favor the change Most USU students are going to hang their heads in sorrow and give in to this undemocratic administrative tactc For those who seek more information there is still hope On Wednesday at noon there will be a panel discussion in the Sunburst Lounge This panel includes Dean Claude Burtenshaw newly elected Logan commissioner Russ Fjeldsted Chief William Sanders of the USU Security and myself The issue will for the first time be placed in complete public view I hope that the students of this campus can muster up enough responsibility to become involved in something that directly affects their future at USU and the future of this University as a growing and changing institution On Friday of last week I spoke to Organizations VP : Barbara Beck and expressed to her the need for a student referendum vote concerning this issue Barbara ? told me that she would bring this to the attention ofthe other student government officials If the council' decides to hold this vote it will probably come on? Wednesday along with the panel discussion This along ' should prove whether our Student Government is concerned with the students and their opinions One last point Many students are going to read this and immediately begin calling me some kind of Communist radical fink Not true I only have a desire to see whether or not the students of this campus really have a brain locked up in those heads that you see walking around here each day Whether a person is for or against this proposed change doesn’t matter The most important tiling is whether you people care enough about this University to try and find out what the hell is going on! greg hansen editor gary Iverson business manager marginal In reality fca probably no way in £ educate a great miay concerned students teachers administrators legislators and many others Following are several ideas which may help to create a better future for college news Who does this effect?
