Show division of the territory of dakota A bill has been introduced into the senate by senator senator benator ramsey Bamsey Ramse yand and in the house by mr armst armstrong trong delag delegate td from dakota for the division of dal dai dakota ota territory and an d the erection of a separate territorial government in the northern part thereof f the foll foli following owing is a C copy opy of the petition ori oti which is being generally nil all signed in dakota with a view of helping helping along the project to members of the senate and libuse of representatives in congress assembled your petitioners petition ers would respectfully invite your attention to the sev ses eral cral have been adopted by the dakota Le legislature islat ure praying for a di division vision of oi dakota territory and the erection of a separate to territorial government in the northern part thereof and respectfully peet rully tully urge ur e the adoption of such a measure at your present session since this proposition hasibe was before your honorable body ut atthe the last session the northern pacific railroad has been completed to the missouri river two hundred miles within the limits of this proposed new territory and settlement is rapidly being made not only along t this Is line iino of road but in the valleys of the red bed cheyenne james and missouri rivers rivens and within the borders of this proposed new territory there is already a population of at least seven thousand which will be largely increased during the coming year the people have no direct icom communication muni cation with southern sothern dakota lakota and but little 1 interest in common with the people thereof the proposed new territory is left almost wholly without representation sen tation by the dai Dal dakota cota tota legislature and without provision or courts the distance to the seab seat of government by the nearest traveled route from any portion of bundred posed ased new territory is about seven hundred miles and from bismarck a city of importance nearly equal to the present capital near of dakota nine hundred miles thel that thom soil soll of the proposed new territory ry is well adapted to farming less than twelve per cent of it being waste land an and it is 19 rich in mineral CC it not only already lias has two hundred miles of completed railroad but has hae within its borders two thousand abd miles of navigable rivers embracing the yellowstone missouri and red bed rivers with irith an abundance of timber along their borders it possesses in short abort all the elements decem necessary iry try to build up a prosperous b fous state and aud injustice in justice to the people already there congress should at once give thomm thorn territorial government for which your peti will ever pray |
