And with the spring madness at Aggie Tech the election craze also occurs Why a craze? The last two spring elections have hetn turbulent to say the least In the spring of 1967 the ASUSI president won by a slim vote majority In the spring of 196S the entire election was declared illegal Turbulent yes! : Winter1 quarter is almost over and the (Make no mistake this one's not satire — ) I feel that when a person dies his body atomizes slower in the grave faster by cremation and returns into the swirling chang natural realm of things ing Which we insist is ordered One atom might become part of a snowflake or a raindrop another a cloud a plant or a flower This is not a very appealing view for those of you who are busy packing your bags for heaven every Sunday and at times I don’t even like the thought of it but my mind tells me this is how it goes and it feels val id and real 1 Weak! ASUSU elections are probably always turbulent because students construct the election rules and the way elections are handled Error and confusion then are expected My own formula for success of elections is determined by the election rules themselves and byva strong elections torn-itte- e Unfortunately the present election rules are weak The very fact that ASUSU Senate (student politicians) approve but really make the rules is one reason for their weakness Senators and executive council members rely upon their own election experiences when they add more election rules to the proposed election committee rules The consequences of this is that an election chairman has to conform to the rules in order to conduct an election He can only interpret them in light of what senate says Rules therefore could be more meaningful if they were written by the elections committee who were well experienced in past procedure The rules then could be approved by Student Court instead of student senate Burke Baby A strong elections chairman last year Burke Christensen feels the elections rules are "terrible” Burke knows better what is going on than anyone else on the campus and elections committee at present Burke feels the first flaw is in the restriction of where and when campaign signs can be placed "This is a riciulus assertion to have certain space for a candidate and a candidate can only spend a certain amount of money” he said Burke feels candidates should be able to put signs where they think will help them in the campaign He also feels signs should be allowed in the buildings "The Student Freedom Party did more for campus campaigns last spring" Burke said "We should have more mass participation” he said Burke feels that 1500 students electing officers out of a student body of 8000 is tyranny "Parties would do a great deal to eliminate this” he adds Burke feels that the elections chairman should have more power to punish election offenders "Instead of disqualifying candidates the election rules should provide for five per cent reduction in vote tally" he said FRIDAY: Nitty Gritty predicts what will happen in the spring election LITTLE MAN ON CAMPUS First Gear So there is no eternity for this bag of flesh and bones and life is a mere snap of mother nature’s fingers It’s a short fast ride that most people take in third gear and I prefer to take in first gear with the gas pedal floored I drink smoke make love hunt fish dance and sing because that is what I enjoy and life is to be enjoyed I do it because it feels real and valid and alive and if you want to go to church or sit in your plastic fantastic wallpapered cubicles and watch color TV or pack up the wife and kids in your on credit new Chevy station wagon and go over to grandmas well that’s fine too if it’s real and valid and not simply necessary I’m not going to get in your way I won’t close your church To es so please don’t ciose my bars 1 won’t bother your shiny cars if you let me drive my old Chevy on your super high ways so I can see and feel the world while you’re thirty thous and feet closer to heaven in your Boeing 707 ter-ribl- ter as there is crying Religion too am a God no more than you my friend and I have a religion too Its sacraments are broiled beef and Budwieser its choir is The Doors its altar So I religious FATI MARJANI al n systems necessary?” I was de termined to do it so I started going from one office into an other Since wanted to find an equal number of participants which was very hard to find as a result I was not able to do so I made scores of telephone I calls contacting scores of people and totally 50 professors However in general one gets the impression that “either freedom of speech and thought are stifled in USU or at least it needs superhuman courage” The reason we put a few “against” article at the beginning was just to bring about in terest and debate We had many they better not touch it since they might loose both people and the administration’s favor 3 Third group mumbled and one got the impression that they did not like it 4 Fourth group the lack of time and expressed background I explained the procedure to all of them and the only thing I asked for was the preliminary “for” or “against’’ answer did not care what their beliefs I were The earliest articles came in 3 weeks after my proposal THCSf CPA2Y I K) T WOfK E6 V£T AEE WILLING JUST HOW FAR SOME OF TO SEX A GftM?
