stated that this country is in Vietnam is a tragic mistake and debacle The times perilous a “business as usual” approach to the problems of the cities and the negroes would be nothing less than suicidal The USA ener-etiis confronted with problems that call for ambitious and con of a in new spirit for creativity efforts cern and action to solve problems It is equally important to ex amine our “stop-Nixon- ” not there and he doesn’t eagerly accept a “genuine draft” but it is expect one Governor Rockefeller says that he intends to face squarely up to the issues There is a discernible feeling that we cannot afford business as usual” Rockefeller is genuinely concerned about Vietnam and the cities If Rockefeller fought for the nomination there would be a polarization in the Republican party It would be a polarization of personalities rather than the result of honest differences about meeting problems There would be less concern about issues and more concern with competing candidates Each side in a typical conservative' moderate split would take a more ideological position taking stands and making concessions in favor of small factions at each extreme within the party Ultimately one would lose almost certainly Rockefeller Nixon would emerge from the Republican convention compromised into an ideological rigidness tliat would not be good for him or for the possibility of solving the problems tUat face the nation sentiment in the nation a J Considering the strong personally unchallenged Nixon would be a more And Nixon would be the Nixon and realistic ecumenical candidate in any event It is best that he be open to the most constructive possible dialogue on the major Issues It is best that he be in a position where he is willing to see and necessarialternatives to LBJ’s policies-essentia- lly ly confronted by constructive where he will be listening to what Rockefeller and Romney (and others) have to say President Johnson’s policies especially on Vietnam are untenable in the face of realistic informed criticism So the issues can be and should be of paramount concern An honest appraisal of LBJ’s policies should lead to a Republican alternative that will actually point toward solution of crucial problems at home and anti-LB- actual experience of travel to all Foreign Countries London Great Britain See these offerings at our office COLBURN 5 By Janice Elliott extent Studying the contents of the dreams got me interested in studying the biology of dreaming what the body and brain do dur ing a dream” Hartmann says To find out when Zwilliger dreamed electrodes were taped to his body to measure pulse eye movements brainwaves res piration and heart beat transmitted The electrodes tiny electrical impulses to a monitoring machine which amplified and recorded them on graph paper Changes in the patterns of lines indicated when Swilliger started a dream and how long it lasted Test subjects fall asleep na turally in the laboratory “bed “The first night is not exhibit a small personality when handed success in the Republican party As a realistic politician he would not he should not There would undoubtedly be angry extremists largely of the right considering the nature of the Republican party The question would then be whether Nixon would unnecessarily pay too much attention to these people In other words the voluntary withdrawal of Republican liberals and their stated intention of supporting (obviously Nfxoo) a single candidate in constructing realistic alternatives to LBJ’s policies makes it possible for the nominee to avoid concessions to right-winextremists This’ leaves a single question for Republicans Can Nixon win? this does not appear to be In the light of Democratic So the Republicans have apparently a seriodsconsideration to win and liberal Republicans have taken the most realis-ti- c path toward influencing the position of the party nominee The events in (he Republican party shift a much larger burden back to the Democrats The emergence of Senators McCarthy and Kennedy to challenge President Johnson is encouraging Events within both parties and their relation to each other portend good for the country because they point to facing up to the issues LBJ can't expect tcM win against a united Republican party unless the wounds in the Democratic party are miraculously healed Despite Vice President Humphrey’s faith this is not likely Gene McCarthy and Bob Kennedy are honestly concerned with the issues particularly Vietnam It appears that debate on alternatives to our present course will continue within the Democratic party the Democratic party will be under tremendous Nevertheless pressure to put up a united front against the Republicans But there will be no buckling under to LBJ’s positions because his policies are so indefensible and because opposing candidates have come forward with genuine concern on the issues Not only are there deep differences J McCarthy has demonstrated the strength of the feeling Hugh concessions on the part of LBJ would be necessary to effect a compromise inside the Democratic party At this point LBJ seems to be irrevocably committed to his present policies (and neither the NLF or Hanoi will do him any favors) It appears that the Democratic party will remain split But the prospect of a united Republican party coupled with the intransigence of LBJ makes it conceivable that the Democrats would unseat the incumbent and try to unite behind KennedyMcCarthy policies The immediate outcome should be that in the primaries the Republicans will be impressed with strong sentiment for alternatives to our present course in Vietnam This will be seen in the Democratic as in the New Hampshire primary Also Republicans of a more liberal stripe will probably continue to vote for Kennedy or McCarthy as 5000 did in New Hampshire Thus Republicans should be led to take the position on our problems at home and abroad that the national interest dictates Increasingly it appears that the gravity of the problems facing the US and or the genuine concern of leading political figures will make issues and alternatives much more important than indivi-dual- s and personalities This is a heartening reflection on the US and its people in a “time of troubles” Apparently skill and intelligence will be brought to bear on our problems in creative attempts to sain
