Show USU CLASS tfieatre Corner review CHANGES Classes Deleted One Act Plays by Trudy Todd depended Last Thursday night the open ing ot the one act play trilogy was an exciting evening of theatre at Utah State Presented at the familiar Lyric comfortable Theatre to a small and Intimate audience the plays student dir ected and for the most part stu dent acted were an Intense and In experiment enlightening theatre production The fact that the plays were student directed did not In any way diminish the total effect of the productions and In fact probably added to audience In terest and Involvement There were the usual blocking problems and groping for lines that gener ally accompany opening night trauma but these minor diffl culties were for the most part Ignored and ignorable The vivid and truly emotional performance of the evening was given by John Hunt Associate Professor In the Forest Science department In “Down to the Sea In Ships” He portrayed Jonas Slattery and his performance was so strenuous and cathartic that it was literally exhausting He built the emotion to a pitch of frenzy heightened by sounds of sea birds and an ocean storm then dropped the audience Into a silence of bleak depression that was over whelming Norma Keeler pre sented this play mood In a spar sely set stage so the audience's full attention was drawn to the two actors and a dim street light This play was the most diffl cult to present because of the fact that the two actors had to pre sent and sustain the whole emo tion and audience involvement Friends H Reuben Reynolds To profes sor emeritus of art will be hon ored Thursday for more than 45 years of service to art in Utah and at USU at a testimonial dinner Professor Reynolds who re June 30 began his career at USU In 1923 after graduating from the Chicago Ar Institute tires Professor Reynolds and Mrs Reynolds will be guests of honor at the dinner which will be held in the Walnut Room of the Utah State Union at 7 pm Not only has he conducted art In communities workshops throughout the state but he has also presented paintings in state and private collections Because of his service to USU and the state of Utah his name has been evening on their this play presented that completely to do The next ability “Gunpowder at Dawn” was a comedy about two men en gaged In a duel with a weapon of most unusual choice Lee John son the director used all pos sible stage business to height en the ironic effect of the two men waiting for the sputtering fuse to reach the ominous powder To do this he used not keg only wellplaced voice emphasis but also effective blocking and de lightful hand gestures such as putting out a cigar on the top of the powder keg An even better aspect of Lee’s directing was his effect of near synaesthesla by adding to the theatre exper ience the sense of smell The smell of sulphur and the burning sputtering powder keg fuse per This play vaded the audience was also dependent upon the strength of the two actors but unlike “Down to the Sea In Ships” the emotion was not the thing but rather the clever dialogue of exposition and logic that led to the ironic duel of revenge The final production of the evening was “The Hanging of Abner Martin” directed by Al Ian Gross This play was per haps the most popular but for reasons beyond the acting or worth of the play Itself It was a terribly funny play about Abner who wants to hang himself on the backyard apple tree because he Is tired of the rat race of sub urbia The set was more of the type that audiences are adjust ed to seeing and setting up parts of It with an open curtain added to the Interest and amusement With the type of burlesque and low comedy that made up a good deal of the dialogue and action Who In Ameri As general art chairman of the Days of ‘47 Centennial Commit tee he brought a notable collec- tion of art the “100 years of painting” exhibition from the Whitney and Metropolitan mus eums In New York to The clue to the whole significance of Abner’s plight and its presentation came in the open Ing minutes of the play when the narrator’s introductory speech drowns out Abner’s diatribe on society By presenting this really tragic situation In a burlesque but perceived real significance that was restricted to the back ground The actors played their stock parts well but this play was not really much of a chal lenge in any sense of theatre except In the need to avoid trite ness and moralizing y The overall effect of this of student productions was The Involving and enlightening best analysis would approach the productions merely from the standpoint of whether or not the directors achieved the effects that they had set out to achieve The honest answer to this ques tlon must come from the directors who for the first time saw the totality of the theatre It would Roman literature HI :30 3 li Sec 1 mwf Manning INTERESTED In ANYONE working on the MacomboDlnner Dance committee are Invited
