Show Student Life MAN ON CAMPUS LITTLE Zapped by Mark Zauqq Spring Is Sprung Packer Analysis ‘Paul Harveyism’: Not Journalism Saturday mornings over the ABC radio network Paul Harvey broadcasts what he This is somewhat calls his '"commentary” different from his regular weekday newscasts in that he usually concentrates and comments on a particluar subject One such commentary a few months ago dealt with the "irresponsibility” of the electronic news media in violence and contributing to riots Mr Harvey indicated he was against governmental control of news but he now thinks we were at the other extreme In other newscasts Harvey will continue to "jab” at how news reporters generally neglect reporting the brighter happenings of life Paul Harvey is not the only one who often makes such accusations to both the electronic and printed news media Many and yellow complain of sensationalism journalism Because we all rely on the mass media for news and information it is important that we think about what its effect is on society To help activate your grey matter just a bit if you’re interested in the subject I will answer Paul Harvey's charges in the remainder of this column so you may observe the dialog Mr Harvey you would have people think that news reporting is at an all time low at present Yes there are many poor journalists However you’re one of them if you think that overall journalism is at an all time low Today journalism is of much higher quality than it was during the "penny press” and "yellow journalism” era Even at the time of the framing of the Constitution the concept of objective reporting and separation of news and editorial material was unheard of And yet this was the time when freedom of the press was strongly established ! John Brooks in his perceptive book The great Leap spoke of how in the last few years because of increasing operational costs and competition from the electronic news media newspapers have dwindled in number He said it is to the credit of newspapers that they have not turned to in the light of increased sensationalism competition You Mr Harvey accuse newsmen of riots This is a vast over some starting as many of your ideas are simplification it is true really do Some news reporters of a ethics true journalist One have the not here of flash a a shove might protester flashbulb there But many people go beyond this and say that a reporter's mere presence causes a group to riot because the "eyes of the media" are watching Many demonstrators But do show off before the newsmen others demonstrate because they have a Judging from appearances I couljj most be inclined to say that spring is us Those warm days of the past but a preview of the days to come chance to show their agony and frustration to the nation via the press One important fact should be recognized The reining of an event changes Another indication that spring the way is the way that the grass pa and skirts are coming up More and the nature of that event A person sitting in a room may behave differently if he knows he’s being watched A football team are there Permay play harder if people sons in public office may conduct their business more carefully if they know the watchful eye of the press is always there And finally a mob may act differently is (more or less violently) if the press present than if the press were not present is nit people will be seen sitting on the grass the quad Canyon picnics baseball and ball games sun bathing and just h around will again become the predomiail craze Everyone will be able to find time for everything except studies fore it will be easier for the studious to get good grades because of the lull the competition Mr Harvey I think your complaint cannot be justifiably leveled against the electronic news media in general Many stations separate their news and editorial material Many stations campaign against the long range causes of riots causes such as poverty poor education opportunities and racial prejudice Unfortunately there are too many stations that report the news neither responsibly nor irresponsibly they for all their merely subscribe to the nets read” wire & and national coverage "rip and local regional coverage copy for As the buds swell into bloom ir the trees take on their new coat of lease this campus also awakens from its winu dormancy and again shows signs of All those who have spent spring at 0 can verify that it is a most beautiful pit at a most wonderful time of the year 'Tm of which to the o However keep your cool! If t weather stays as nice as it has been tlr everyday news stories And finally Mr Harvey since you have felt free to accuse some newscasters of poor news reporting I feel free to accuse you of the same is a mountain of things to do Just f an idea here is a list of some suggest to while away your time: Go skiing (waif or snow) brush up on your tennis the common accuse you of not practicing journalbut "Paul Harveyism” If you’re so concerned about news reporting being fair and objective why don’t you practice it yourself? You select facts and events that back up your own point of view By the tone of your voice and selection of descriptive phrases you cast editorial comment on the news stories you report And finally you mix your own opinion into the story As your opinion of the Vietnam situation has changed everyone has known about it Your newscasts are seeping with emotionalism However don’t get me wrong I’m not against "Paul Harveyism” I find your newscast interesting and thought provoking I only ask two things of you One if you want to criticize other newsmen don’t give the impression that you are practicing pure journalism You’re not Two Please don't call your program "Paul Harvey News” five days a week then "Paul Harvey Comments" on Saturday The title “Paul Harvey Comments’" used everyday Packer: Dear Mr This is in response to your letter of January 24 1968 wherein State University's Student Constitution you asked whether the Utah is a legal document applied to government a constitution is the fundamental organic law of a nation or state As you know the United States of America has such a constitution which is the supreme law of the land As constitution as applied to a student body is the mode of organization of your group As applied to social groups a constitution may be the means by which the group is governed and which sets forth the purposes aims objectives and means by which this group will conduct its activities You may of course pass any kind of a resolution or provision with reference to your student body you wish however it does not follow that such a resolution or provision would be binding on the board of trustees of the university The Board of Trustees of the Utah State University is charged with administering the affairs of that institution A 15 years ago — is now common on the college campus the Valparaiso (Ind) University Torch commented in an editorial The increase in academic pressure in the community (from the prevalent attitude "you must succeed in college to be happy and productive”) together with the edugrowing impersonality of large-scalincrease caused a corresponding cation has in the psychological problems of the stue dent Almost every student quickly covers how many people are deeply unhappy about their lives and the number of such people increases fantastically in four years of college We hazard the guess that 25 per cent of college students have psychological difficulties severe enough to impair their academic performance and dis- make them fundamentally unhappy For every person who reveals his personal problems there are probably three or four who worry about them in privacy prevented by fear of social stigma from disclosing them Many students know someone who has either attempted suicide or seriously contemplated doing so If so many students have reached this point of despair we may readily conclude that great numbers of others are in less desperate but nevertheless serious situations Factors contributing to psychological problems are complex and no superficial discussion could possibly confront them We would however suggest several areas of possible inquiry: poor living environment parental expectations inadequate outlets for relaxation crisis in ethical values sexual problems collapse of religious and meaning in human life in general and beliefs and an inability to find relevance in the academic life in particular Many of the problems stem from pressures exerted by society at large and as such are not remediable by any particular university But there are things which can and should be done to ameliorate the resulting difficulties Certainly the present psychological counseling facilities are totally inadequate There needs to be too some comprehensive by the entire community of this problem and an end to claims that the typical VU student is a happy securely religious individual We need a hard realistic look at ourselves followed by fresh ideas and expanded
