| Show scarlet fever the following is from the pen of doctor F ba M blomn logan permanent secretary of tho the board of health and appeared in the pacific medical and surgical journal in view of the prevalence of scarlet fever in various parts of the state and especially in san francisco as shown in our table I 1 deem it proper at the present writing november to submit for the benefit bene bent nit fit of the public the following brief memorandum respecting its nature and the most available means of com batting and arresting its ravages the disease is generally considered to be eminently communicable muri murl muni cable leable the tho patient contaminating the atmosphere so that no susceptible c person pers on can remain in the same room or indeed in the same house without danger of contracting tr it the prophylaxis or preventive treatment therefore requires tile the separation of the healthy from those affected with the disease and from those who have intercourse ter course with such patients this is the only measure that promises any ant positively good ic ie results suits hence it should be carried out during a malignant epidemic even to the temporary bream breau breaking ng up of every academic establishment fo for r it is hardly possible to isolate children in the same house or school how eyer large largo so as to prevent the t h c disease from spreading fumigation and the so called disinfectants disinfect ants will NY ill lii not destroy miasmatic mias mati in tho the sick room consequently cleanliness cloan liness and ventilation are imperatively called for we cannot disinfect the walls of ili ill the chamber nor the tile clothes of the patient except by washing them or exposing them to a dry heat exceed exceeding in cr the boiling temperature the d diet diot ilot hiot of the patient should bo be slops light nutritious broths booths milk etc the tho danger should not be considered past till the desquamation dc of the skin kill shall shail have been thoroughly accomplished till all ithe tho old cuticle has been removed therefore the patient should bo be kept in bed till convalescence vales cence is perfectly established and the temperature of the room maintained about and not below sixty degrees if the whole surface of the body is well rubbed over once or twice a day with camphorated camph orated oil the irritation of the skin will bo be soothed and the process of de squam atlon facilitated in fact the tho free use of this oil is one of tho the best preventives against Z all the eruptive fevers all ages are liable 0 to the disease but it is most common comm on to childhood except during the early mouthy months of lactation the e chances anc ane s of attack aro arc less for ve y d ung infants iu tants and deci deel decline ine lne rapidly rapidly after the t e fifth year the prooro pro dro mal stage begins begin with repeated rid rigors more rarely with a single chill the bodily temPer temperature aturo soon ilses from its normal heat 98 degrees to or degrees and the pulse is often to beats a minute and since along with the fever feyer tile the subjective and objective symptoms of inflammation of the threat throat ally occur we may cide even at this ta time ime thebie that ine case is one of commencing 0 tina and not of mea measles sies 0 or r other othar infectious disease medical advice addic 0 should always be had courte recourse re to for the worst cases we sometimes meet with are those in which tho the disease has from its apparently mild character been left to luelf itself dr J P F donnelly sends us 6 the following remedy ile he says it will not fail if if strictly followed and de dc clares that it has been used with success in england and france take of the pulverized licia leibof of lobelia a teaspoonful with half a atea tea spoon of valerian root mix both in two ounces of good vinegar to a child four years of age a dessert spoonful may be given the dose to be reduced when given toa tova younge younger r child the dose until the patient vomits freely after the emetic has taken efel effect act sponge the entire body with vinegar and when the fever has abated give div e freely of bitter compounds composed of herbs as also of diu fetics to cleanse the system and expel ross humors that might ter teil minate in ill dropsy or consumption io n if not attended to in the meantime while using this child must be kept warm and a hot brick applied to tile the feet wet with vinegar do this previous to administering the emetic use also freely of red arx raspberry leaves and pennyroyal when this treatment is followed a speedy cure is effected in a short time all symptoms may be treated similarly |
