Show 2 — STUDENT LIFE (Editor’s Note: The follow-in- g article was written by Athletic Director Frank “Bus” Williams to explain policies of the USU athletic department His ideas do not necessarily represent those of Student Life but they are included here for benefit of stu-dentbo- members) Editor Student Life As per your suggestion I submit to you a synopsis of my report to the senate: TRACK — We are interested in building the track program at Utah State University as well as all of our sports so far as our income will permit us Presently we in construction of a indoor track facility in present Fieldhouse so sport can be developed events sponsored during indoor seasonal period Regarding the staduim are fine our the and our let 1966 MAY 27 me first say that a track stadium and a football stadium do not compliment each other since the better viewing for one sport deters from good viewing of the other The basic fact here is the distance the spectators are from the contest The line of sight to the event is also an appreciable factor in this analysis In addition a track in the stadium also greatly creases cost of site preparation (approximately 3) It in- also prohibits the possibility of end zone seating where the TONIGHT ONLY raiium y PRESENTS JOHN re-locat- ed O HARA S it ft 01 TTi PANAVISIONusto UNITED ARTISTS THRU MONDAY BIG DOUBLE FEATURE MlRlSCH COMPANY EDWARD LALPERSON THE ACADEMY $ AWARD WINNER! sealed smoking room is a beautiful room The finish and quality is compai4-abl- e to any of the other rooms of the Union Why then is the room not accepted as the Hub or the Spree Of course we all realize why the room must be sealed from the rest of the building — one wouldn’t want cancer producing smoke leaking out to infiltrate the rest of the building We have heard about the disappearing door now it’s a question of the disappearing windows They really haven’t disappeared they’re just being carefully concealed The perfectly clear glass windows between the briar and the hall are carefully covered with brown wrapping paper Since the room was opened this paper has been torn down twice In talking to the administration I was informed that if the paper is torn down again the room may very likely be closed The paper is not permanent but will be replaced with curtains in the — vision (I am inferring here that our oportumties for the latter two aFe Ponced with this type of schedule) Presently we are in bid for an invitation to the Western Athletic Conference Whether this bid for membership is re aliezed or not will not be d- etermined until the June meetings of the Western Athletic Conference Presidents and this also has a bearing on our scheduling with Weber There may be other less important considerations I would like to touch brief ly on other points brought up at the student senate Those responsible are doing every-thin- g possible to keep the at a bare minimum costs for the students at Utah State and I can assure you that these people are succeeding We surely “can’t have our cake and eat it too” as the expression goes It has been wondered why the new assembly center will not seat more than 10000 and why the stadium is only being planned for 20000 spectators We are making every attempt to give us adequate facilities for now and in the f- uture We in both these buildings are making ttempt to keep every this cost at athe bare minimum The assembly center will seat 10000 with provisions for future expa- The stadium is being planned for the immediate nsion seating of 20000 with the possibility for future expansion I believe this encompasses most of the questions regarding the Dresent facilities Thank you “Bus” Williams future The question arises why aren’t the windows of the Hub and Spree covered Administration explained that the Board of Trustees stipulated in allowing the room that there be no contact visual or other between the Briar and the rest of the building Is it wise to have spent $23000 for the room and then ignore it and not accept it as part of the Union and the At The Bookstore school? Steve Olson Behind Paper Editor Student Life? For several years students at USU have had a request for a smoking room and succeeded this year in getting one at the cost of $23000 If the University is willing to put forth so much money why do they hide it behind paper? The University doesn’t hide any other part of the campus so why should they hide the smoking room? If they are hiding anything why don’t they start the TJ’s and Pre-Fab- s David Errige Darrell Roskelley Bonnie Budge Larry Anthon Bob Gregory Janet Johnson Gordon Barlow Thanks for your patronage the past year We during and enjoyed helping ess have r0 elating with yoUthis we look forward the coming year fun Summer!
