Show 4 — STUDENT LIFE MAY 23 1946 E33 P'1 ¥ V'Zv-- i By Brent Barfuss Asst Sports Editor The Utah State baseballers closed their 1966 baseball season in great fashion as they dumped Idaho State in a doubleheader by the tune of 20-and 12-- 9 Power in the form of the long ball and great pitching by Bill Lugo made the first game seem like a toy to the Aggies Three home runs and five doubles were added to eleven singles as the Utags collected hits and runs in every inning The U S U horsehidemen had been steadily adding points each inning but the fifth inning was the real kil 1 Lugo--US- U By Sue Rosenbaum ’Life Staff Writer USU baseball pitcher Bill Lugo was recipient of Baseball’s Most Valuable Player Award at the Senior 1966 Utah State Letterman’s Banquet last week He was selected for the honor by the baseball team and also receiving the Outstanding Athlete of Minor Sports Award the Athletic Council Award Lugo whose future plans are to go into the field of coaching or recreation rates Sandy Koufax as the perfect pitcher Lugo’s favorite pitch is the change up He commented that he doesn't throw it very often since the coach and other players make fun of and try to imitate his unique way of throwing it Lugo feels he has had ex- cellent coaching in college ball 'V r- f ler to the visiting Bengals Geames started off with a walk which resulted in an additional run when Robson followed with a homerun that sailed over the rightfield fence Hill flied out Frohlich hit safely but was picked off trying to go to second Hale walked and Mettler hit a powerful homerun his second of the game Lugo collected a double then Alvarado and Clark walked to fill the bases Geames came up for the second time in the inning and got a double driving in two runs Robson followed with a double driving two more across the plate Hill follow ed with a hit as did Frohlich pounding the ninth run across the plate in the fifth inning Hale popped out to end the inning Bill Lugo won his seventh game to end the season with a 3 record He allowed eight hits but they were rather harmless as only one runner was able to cross home plate Bill didn’t give up a walk and fanned ten batters Idaho State looked poor defensively as they committed four errors plus the pitchers gave up seven walks that were changed into Aggie runs It took three Bengal pitchers to withstand the bombing bats of the Utag diamondmen 7-- The two Daves Clark and two with Alvarado were heavy Aggie bats In the second game Idaho State started hitting the ball better but the Ags once again used the long ball to come out the victor The Bengals had 9 runs from 11 hits compared to 12 runs and 10 hits for the Logan diamondmen USU had 4 errors to make the game close Swingle was the second game winner when he came n in to relieve starter Tom Cul-liga- however Swingle needed help from first game winner Bill Lugo Lugo pitched three more innings to add to his seven in the first game He had 13 strikeouts total for both games Swingle’s record is 1 for the season Gary Frohlich knocked in school record shows only 1 responsible for the rise of half of the Aggie runs in the baseball in this area “‘He second game by hitting two loss The summer after graduation Lugo received his first has put in a lot of hard work home runs He went 6 for 3 experience in managing when and time and that is the in the doubleheader and drove he gathered up some local only way to build a good ball 9 runs across the plate Robhigh school players and form- -
