By Ralph Maughan EDITOR’S NOTE: “The Target Board” by Ralph Maughan Jr will be a regular feature of STUDENT LIFE this year Maughan comment on selected subjects during the year and as a columnist will express his personal opinions to you as sludentbody members will 15-1- Ever since Red China exploded her first atomic bomb it has been popular among less ideology dedicated to ruling the world” The FBI chief asserted in his statement that the CPUSA had supported the student march on the national capital April 17 1965 He said that communist leaders claimed a major role in the demonstration Their goal he said "is to incite citizens to the point that they will demand American forces be withdrawn from Vietnam and other places allowing international communism to take over and engulf more defenseless countries" Concluding his remarks Hoover said “fortunately the strength and greatness of our nation lie in its millions of patriotic and loyal citizens— Americans who will not swallow the Red bait of the cunning communist emissaries Americans who will rally behind our Government leaders at this ” crucial time -- We join with Mr Hoover in deploring g movements such as those planned by the Berkeley When group th2 United States is most in need of strong citizenship and patriotism in maintenance of freedom such demonstrations can have only detrimental effects Examples of internal strife in America are used by opposing countries as propaganda to persuade their citizens that the U S is not united In reality most Americans arc "patriotic and loyal citizens " Leftists and Communists arc in the minority but their various activities have learned them publicity sometimes quite out of proportion Utah State is not immune to subversive influences There are some associated with the university who refuse to support the U S government in defense of freedom There are also those who have displayed conduct contrary to established university regulations When university rules have been violated in the r violators have received prescribed punishment The uni sity was firm and unyielding in enforcement of its rules consider the firm and unyielding stand with respect to verswe pressures to be the only and logical appro proper Submission to pressure groups merely provides them encouragement to exert additional pressure in other at We hope that during the 1965-6- 6 academic year L citizens will be patriotic Americans and respectable legians in left-win- every respect Laird Walker molders of public opinion in n the United States to the potential threat of nuclear war with Red China They’ liae said much about of the insanity idea Red China has so many people that she would emerge the winner in any nuclear showdown with the U S They tell us that it will be years before China has an effective delivery system By that time the Chinese brand of Communism will have mellowed These men forget that China doesn’t need to meet all of the problems that we had to in creating a great nuclear force We had to make all of the technological play-dow- Mao-tse-Tung- H£'£ -- rue most W£ll apjusud Vietnam” J Edgar Hoover director of the FBI in a recent edition of the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin spoke out against such activities and stated: "America today is engaged in a deadly struggle for the survival of the free world While our nation is fending off the strangling grip of international communism on foreign soil attempts are being made at home to undermine and distort its actions " Hoover further stated “tremendous pressure and criticism are being leveled against the President and the Congress to confuse and mislead the American public Irresponsible and ‘sneak atcharges of ‘invaders' 'brutal agression tacks' are used to discredit our Government in hopes it will be forced to abondon its role as defender of freedom Some ©f this protest comes from legitimate peace groups and others who are opposed to the course of action being followed in Vietnam and the Dominican Republic However much of the agitation is a part of a diabolical scheme contrived by the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) an integral arm of the international communist conspiracy the materialistic god- Jr Smithereens EDITOR’S NOTE “Smithereens” by Sheryl Smith is a regular feature of Student life this year We hope yon enjoy her clever and often nitty comments They’re “insults between covers” And the idea all started by comedian Morey Amsterdam is to think up titles for the Thinnest Books Like “My Future in Boxing” by Sonny Liston or “My Years in the White House” by Barry Goldwater Then there’s “Family Planning” by Ethel Kennedy and “Mistakes I’ve Made” by LBJ But these can be localized you know Try thinking up Letters To Editor Tower Patrol? Editor We think the apparent ex- travagant trend in parking decals offers some excellent possibilities for the “creative” mind We wonder if a central tower high above the campus might be employed to police all areas at once The present size of decals would permit this with little difficulty With a slight change in size in view of our present football success perhaps a decal the size of a football would be nice This could even be changed to a basketball and later to a discus with the change of seasons We wonder why the color and des'cm coding of small (1” x 2”) uniform decals placed on the upper edge of the windshield successfully emnloved at other universities mihf not be satisfactory hrp? Perhaps in this case a little Rs concern should be iven t the convenience of those who are employed to “serve” fho students Ppcnof fully J01? Wright Gary Taylor By Sheryl Smith your own Like “How to Register Efficiently” by a freshman Or “Advantages of Being a Greek” by an independent “Students I Trust” could be written quite well by a library checker or any head resident Then there’s “Why I wouldn’t Think of Transferring fi’om USU” by Ken Rich and “Eyebrows of USU Students I Haven’t Seen” by the activity card photographer Speaking of libraries they-r- e qualified to write a Thin Book entitled “Lawns We’ve Planted” Of course there’s Thin Books that don’t require any particular au t h o r Like “Friends Who Ask You To Bring Your Kids Along” and “Psychoanalysts Who Tell You You’re Cured” So at USU there could be “Republicans in the History Department” “Enjo y a b 1 e Trips I’ve Made Up Mail Hill” “Excitement in Logan” and “Classes I’ve Enjoyed” breakthroughts they just follow us and the ’s can Rus- sians Secondly what if Mao turns out to be China’s Lenin rather than her Stalin? Lastly the official Chinese line says that there are so many Chinese that nuclear weapons could not kill nearly all of them At a glance it seems that Mao is wrong because if sufficiently “dirty” bs are used against China all her people would die The radiation would spread across the countryside from the bombs dropped on the cities and kill everyone no matler if there were ten thousand or ten million people near a given city IIoweer the United States doesn't have “dirty” anymore We have phased-othese big edure monsters that muts he dropped from airplanes We rely on small “clean” weapons that are delivered byr missiles This kind of bomb is excellent for use on Soiet cities (where most Russians Iie) and on Chinese cities (where most ChinIl-bom- bs Fall Courses Include Greek A course in elementary classical Greek has been added to the curriculum of the Department of Language at Utah State University for Fall Quarter 'Hie course is designed primarily to develop skills in reading and will treat excerpts from the works of Xenophon Plato and Herodotus The course will be taught by Dr Marian Robertson assistant professor of Language and Music Dr Robertson has an extensive background in Greek having begun her studies at Brigham Young University while she was still a student in high school Dr Robertson has worked constantly with the language since that time and has completed enough academic work t ut ese don’t live) China is an agricultural nation Over 60 percent of its people live away from the cities These people would not be touched by an American attack or response Over 300 million Chinese W’ould survive an American nuclear blow for the Master’s degree (in Greek) At BYU she often taught Greek as a substitute for Dr Hugh Niblcy and later at the University of Utah she regularly taught as an assistant in Greek whenever the demand was sufficient for the advanced literature classes |
