Show o V 2 — STUDENT LIFE OCTOBER 4 Books f n f Strength Proportioned Some Are Shot Down Gods? By I)K JOIIV PATRICK A Japanese critic Masaharu Anesaki has brilliantly expressed an idea which most of us generally admit then frequently Jose sight of: “Art is an inspiration life is a fact The conception and the expression of artistic and circumstances of life” This is the same thing as saying that to appreciate accurately the art of literature of a civilization which is dead and gone — Which lies in the deserts of the past — we must be in a position somehow to reconstruct the life of the artist and the life of those who were interested in art and literature and philosophy — the these characteristics are found to be absent the modern critic is likely to speak of “exceptions” of failure to conform to the rules (even in a period where “rules” are not properly considered im- portant ) ' 1 Hasty Judgement?' I should like to point out here as we begin a new season of book discussion in Student Fife cases that these exceptional should not be dismissed summarily lest we fall into the dangerous trap of misrepresenting the whole question After analyzing the ?0th century as we should examine it thoroughly— including the isolated eases we are tem- pted to ignore in our search for y general phenomena — we are To discover a homogeneity in the productions of our own age broad enough to take In them all and we may also be able to see' that some of the limitations we have imposted on our poets and paintes's and sculpt ers ere to a lik-Vl- large extent the result of hastily preconceived theories Wliat looks like an exception to the general trend as we have misprinted it may be in fact the culminating point of an artistic technique which was already being used with skill in the 19th 18th and lithe century—even' ear- lier! In my view the historian and the critic of the world of books who akes not account of the of such “fragments” exceptional as they are in attempting to recreate to the merits of the 20th century literature Exceptional Writing All the above comes by way of introduction to a truly fine volume of poems which came my way this summer George Johnston's The Cruising Auk (Published by the Oxford University Press) Here is one of these “exceptions” in a sense to come of the general features of the writing of today Says Johnston a Canadian of unusual talent: Some books joke to ease the pain Others tantalize the brain Cruising auks unlike all these Neither hope to shock nor tease Bust just to keep above the SENATE MEMBERS are reminded trees” the first student Senate meeting will be hold Thursday afternoon at 5 u m Johnston's view of life is comic In the Siudentbody Oiganization and serious dignified enchanting Boom Vli 212 160 sophisticated ironic mournful laughable and moving He can write of life (“The world is a boat and I’m in it Going like hell with the breeze”) and he can give us a picture of Elaine in a bikini ("While the incalculable strings gather in What's hers to gather in”) This is the book which really should become the property of every reader with a sense of humor For example again: ‘‘Auk at evening takes a snooze Snores a bit beneath the news: Others on a knowing whim Fetch his book and read of him Great Auk wisdom's in his school : Every snore is meaningful” Or again a passage w'ith which we must conclude: “A fellow’s not made of glass N'or he isn’t made of steel Some of the time he’s an ass Some of the time he’s a heel Some of the time he’s a shot down god And that's the way I feel” Students To Quality Of By JOHN CANNOX Studentbody President As we welcome the new student both transfer and freshman we would suggest a few tlioughts to him You have been shown our facilities and have been told of our strengths and weaknesses Per-to haps in this there is a tendency of lose sight of the real strength Utah State That strength lies not in our buildings or equipment not inour great football and basket-ball (cams no not even in our administration or faculty Rather the strength of Utah State is proportional to the quality of incoming students More precisely the strength of Utah State is you the new student Without you all of the other essentials present together could not prevent the University’s deaOi within four short years Quality new students couple with the Oliver essentials directs a university toward greatness I believe this to be our present course I belive in the capabilities of the ‘‘fall crop” of To each I 2000 new students give the challenge that is his right: To choose from curricular and activities a balanced extra-curricul- urriculum each of you in thanking Judy Turley and her Hello Week committees for a warm and memorable welcome to Utah State You are now one with us and w ill be expected to quickly take your share of the load in the cause of tills University It’s good to be on your team!
