Show DISCOURSE by president BRIGHAM TOUNG young YO UNG de livered at tle the semiannual senh semi annual conform Confor aroe aloe salt lake afy aty oi october 9 0 1872 mErOA muron TED BY DAVID W EVANS I 1 WANT to express my feelings nee fee linga to the lat ter day saints upon certain point of business which pertain ertain to our welfare and I 1 wish to do rit fit it without belag obliged to raise my voice so BO high and so loud as to infringe upon the organs of speech to that degree that I 1 shall have to stop if the people will be still they thay can boar hoar me in my common voice perfectly easy I 1 will not go into all the details with regard to the duties of the latter day saints and their desires as they have manifested them by gathering out from the world and assembling wem sem bling themselves together they generally brally understand them and they can read for themselves thema elvea elves the doctrines of the church and the reasons why we are gathered together but I 1 ielah wish now to impress anthe on the minds of the people the necessity of our taking a course to be able to exist and to sustain ourselves to have nothIng something wi to eat and wear hats hatm to put on our heads and coats mantles blankets vests shirts garments and other things suitable to wear and to make our bodies comfortable pro prok vided aided that the lord should knock the underpinning der pinning from under babylon the time will come when babylon will fall if it should fall now it would leave us pretty destitute we would soon wear out our head dresses and fine clothing and what should we do why we should be as badly off as the saints were when they came into this valley twenty five years ago they picked up a few buckskins antelope skins sheepskins sheep skins buffalo skins and made leggings and moccasins of them and wrapped the buffalo roges robes robes abouna around them some had blankets and some had not some bome had bad shirts and I 1 guess some had not one man told me that he be had not a shirt for himself or family if babylon should happen to tip over so that we could not reach out and gather the necessaries sm saries barles les ies of life we should be in a bad condition I 1 want to put you yon in mind of these things and it is my duty to bay say to the latter day saints that they should take measures to sustain themselves they chev should lay a foundation for feeding and clothing themselves you yon are well aware that there has been a great deal of money spent in this territory to get ket machinery tor for bor lor the purpose of working up the wool and cotton and I 1 think you are pretty well aware that there have been a great many thousand words spoken ken to the latter day saints in these valleys upon the necessity of raising sheep though we have had a tide of opposition against this still wool raising is now proven to he be a success in these anese mountains any and all of the bishops to the contrary notwithstanding this Is ia a fine wool wooi growing country no better in the world we have proved this and we have got a great deal of machinery here to work up the wool most of which Is now standing atilt for the want of wool many of those who have been prevailed upon to raise sheep have not 0 1 mo covetous coye cove teus teas and love money so eo well N icat t they must sell their woolford wool for money and stud send it out of the country in consequence of which the factories are now ut is anding landing still I 1 think there are a few who will recollect that in the excitement of purchasing wool here last may june and july in many instances Instance i I 1 refused to buy their wool if I 1 would have paid a little more than agents from the east I 1 could have got it iu in somo some instances I 1 got it for a little less leas I 1 bought some and let a good deal go and told the people with whom I 1 conversed upon the subject chati that I 1 would let the buying of wool alone until pail rall then I 1 thought I 1 could send east buy my wool and ship it back here and I 1 believe JL I could get it cheaper than I 1 could get it then and it is now verily so for I 1 can send to philadelphia new york boston or anywhere in the eastern country and buy wool and ship it back here from 18 10 to 30 per cent cheaper than I 1 could buy it here last spring I 1 can send west and buy wool and ship it here and save bave a still higher per cen con tage tago this is the difference in the tho price of wool last spring and the fore part of the summer and now what our friends and brethren who own factories will do with regard to purchasing wool I 1 am not able to say some of them probably are able to buy wool and quite a number are botand they who are not will in rii all probability let their factories stand batill JL I want the brethren and sisters to take an interest in sustaining ourselves oure elvea olvea here hore in these mountains it is the duty of the bishops to see that the members of their wards take a course that will build buil up th the ki kingdom aglora of god not only in providing ding food and raiment but see bee that tho the people pie do their duty with regard to the law a w of godin god goa in preserving themselves in purity my mind is now upon those things which some people call temporal and I 1 wish to tc urge them upon the latter day saints I 1 want them to save gave their wool and to keep it in this territory if we have not factories suM sufficient clent to work up all the wool that thai grows in this territory and la in these mountains wo we wili wiil send bad sad nd get more moie ma ehi chi chinery nery and build more factories facto rles rips and work up tho the wool for the people it is ia the duty of those who grow wool to keep it here it Is the duty of the wl wire wife fe 0 of f the man who owns sheep to look to it and see that thai that wool is not sold and carried out of the country it Is ia the duty of the bishops to see these men and urge upon them the necessity of keeping the wool in the mountains where it can be worked up and the bishops should set the example exam pla pia thom them themselves selves I 1 we expect they do if they do not they are not fit for bishops it if is the duty of the bishops to see the wives of these men and their children that they may prevail on their greedy covetous fathers or husbands who would sacrifice the prosperity of the kingdom of god for a little worldly wealth and see that they thoy do not run distracted or go crazy over a little money I 1 say the bishops should see to it that these men who have sheep act abt like rational reasonable men what are you here for what dilyou did dla you come for virtually Virtu aLy you alisay all ali say bay you left eft babylon and came here to build julid up the kingdom of god but our acts speak as aa loud and a little louder than oar words can we vo witness to ta one another and to the heavens and to all people that we believe in building up the kingdom of god on the earth there is an item that ought to be before the latter day saints with regard to the kingdom ai as s it will be built up they ought to teach themselves read the scriptures the old and now testament the prophecies what the savior and his apostles have said and what has been delivered to us in the latter days and compare them and then draw their own conclusions clu and see if they are under the necessity ol of working temporally literally manually physically for lor the building up of the kingdom of heaven I 1 say that we are or it never will be built up with regard to the fundamental facts of our doctrines we can not show to any person that thit we have faith therein except by our works if I 1 were now in the world and an elder was to come along and preach and I 1 were to go and hear bear him the act of walking to the meeting house or to the private dwelling house bouse would be manual labor I 1 might believe every word such an elder said in preaching the gospel but if I 1 never took any steps towards ful fui fulfilling filling his bis requirements quire ments who would know anything about it nobody on the faco face of the earth would there be any manifestation that I 1 had faith not the least in the world and if it started to grow in my heart while listening to the elder eider without work works on my part it would soon die out and cea cease e to exist if I 1 do believe it is a manual labor to getup get up and say to the people fil III 1 I believe that what t this nis man has said is true that is an exercise of the body and a temporal labor well this elder says we should repent of our bins bina I 1 do repent he lre says we should obey the gospel and the first thing after having hann bann or believing it is to togo logo go down into the waters of baptism and to do that is a temporal act physical labor and the act of baptism by him is also a temporal actor ector act aci or labor and so in everything else with regard to the gospel and the building up of the kingdom of gad on the earthle eart hwe must have works or we can not have faith I 1 can not divide between the two the elder is preaching g I 1 believe icon I 1 confess fess and obey and I 1 can not net for my soul divide the temporal the manual the physical labor from the internal faith and hope and joy which the spirit gives and which cause obedience la ia my acts 1 wish to make mako this application right here to the latter day saints if we believe that god is about to establish his bih kingdom upon the earth we believe nirm firm ly that we have got to perform a manual temporal labor to bring this about if the k kingdoms of this world ever become the k kingdoms of our god and his hla christ it will be by his people conforming to tho the plans in instituted for tor or the establishment of a kingdom here on the earth eaith you vou may call it temporal no matter what it Is called it is territory it is domi dominion plon dion in the first place we must have territory then we mus have people and in order to organize this kingdom we must have officers and laws to governor govern or control the subjects to make the org anition of a kingdom perfect we must have every appendage necessary and proper so that the savior can come and reign king of nations sa as he doos doeg king of saints wo we shall be under the necessity of raising breadstuff and then we shall want to oat it wo we shall have to raise our fruit as well as eat it we shall have to raise raibe our vegetables as well as eat them we shall be under the necessity then of making hat hats or of going without them we shall be under the necessity of making clothing coats vests pants shirts and so on or else olse go without them we shall be under the necessity of haying having courts organized ned zed unless all are in tile tiie lord and all walk in his way if that were the case I 1 do not know that we should want any sheriff ah britt eritt marshals constables magistrates jurors judges Judge sor or governors go vernora because the word of the lord would govern and control every person but until that time arrives we shall want officers so that we will be prepared to reckon with the transgressor and we shall have transgressors iu building this kingdom for it will be some somme time yet before all are in the lord the law lair is for the transgressor we must have olli officers cers and aud we already have in this kingdom as now organized all the officers necessary every quorum every every court tind and rut nut authority hority tu to ru rule le all the ua na eions that ever were or ever wili will be upon the earth if they serve god or try to do so bat if we must have an organization after the order and wishes of those who are ignorant of the things of god we must have political and municipal organizations kingdoms aro are organized to suit the conditions of the peo people ae whether the governs ment is that of tto tte the people in the hands bands of a few individuals or centred in one but the kin hin kingdom dorn doin of heaven when organized upon the earth will have every officer law and ordinance necessary for the managing of those who are unruly or who transgress its laws and to rovern govern those who desire to do right but can cau not quite walk to the line and all these powers and authorities are in existence in the midst of this thia people now we have this kingdom organized here upon tha earth and we shall be under the necessity by and by of understanding this or we will be left in a very destitute condition it is my duty to say to the people that it is their duty to make their clothing and permit me to say still further upon the subject of the fashion of cutting cloth and putting it together again that it is most useless um becoming unbecoming and ridi cu lour the present custom of many is such that I 1 would as soon see a squaw go through the streets with a veny very little on as to see clothing piled up until it reaches perhaps the top of the hedge or fence its wearer is passing if I 1 do not say much about such customs and fashions I 1 shall probably skip over some naughty words in my feelings they are positively ridiculous they are so useless and unbecoming jo do you yon recollect a fash fashion ionn loft there was a few years ago that has now nearly ceased when a woman could not walk through the streets without holding her clothes two feet leet in front of her if her arm was long enough I 1 shall not say what I 1 thought of those who followed this fashion now it is on the other side and I 1 do not know but they will get two humps on their backs they have one now and if they get to be dromedaries dro it will be no wonder not the least in the world I 1 recollect a fashion of cutting up cloth some forty years ago that was very peculiar A lady would go antt a store and say to a merchant 1 agi I gouid like to get a dress dross pattern this morning very well what will you have oh bring down your goods and show them this suits pretty well weli 1 I think I 1 will take this IU adame madame ll 11 says the merchant if you will buy the sleeves I 1 will give you the dress this of course is jocosely said sald I 1 refer now to what was called the mutton legged sleeve by comparison it took seven yards for the sleeves and three for the dress that was the way they dressed then how how unbecoming it is to see bee ladies ladles dress ress ross as they do in some places at the present day then another fashion is to wear their dresses short in front walking through the streets and a long train dragging in the dirt behind how unbecoming this is not modesty gentility it or good taste it does not belong to a my lady at all but to an ignorant extravagant or vain minded person who knows not true principle I 1 take tle the the liberty of saying that these fashions are displeasing in n the sight of truth mercy and justice it is displeasing to the spirit of the lord for persons to array themselves in any way whatever that is disgusting to the eye of the pure anu and the prudent there is not a latter day saint nor a former day saint that ever did or ever will expect to see any such customs or fashions when they set get into heaven if they wee wei e to see an ari angel they would see a being beautifully but modestly dressed white comely and nice to look upon I 1 would like to advise the latter day saints fo avoid these foolish customs an and habit babit let them pass by and not follow them they do not belong to us I 1 would like to repeat to the ladies what we have said hundreds and thousands of times they should make their own headdresses addresses he and fashions independent cfall of all ali the rest of the inhabitants of the earth pay no attention to what others do it is no matter what they do or how they dress latter day saints sainta should dress in that plain neat comely manner that will be plea piea pleasant pleasing sint aej and prudent in every sense of the word before the lord and try and please him that we serve erve the being that we acknowledge as our god not flaunting flirting |
