(Editor’s note: This editorial was written especially for Student Life at the request of the editor by Dr John C Carlisle assistant to the president and a member of the education department) With the end of the war appearing nearer than people dared even to hope for only a short time ago many young men and women net actually in the armed services are reaching the decision “I’m going back to college now” They know inwardly that a great future looms ahead for the new America They are convinced that in that future opportunities for4pjuth — adequately trained — will be brighter than ever bef5 But they are certain that into that training must go several years of college life — years in which one can choose and prepare for a vocation that will bring out his best — years in which he can enjoy the thrill of exploring the world’s knowledge with other minds embarked upon the same search To the high school graduate coming in for his first taste of college to the student transferring from some other institution and to her own former students coming back Utah State has much to offer in 1944 and 45 Departments are fully organized in all seven schools Always rich the variety of class offerings is even greater now Student body officers are confident They are planning for a full program of activities Moreover they are looking forward to welcoming the returning veterans the G I Joe’s who will be back to complete a college education interrupted in some cases as long as four years ago Yes for the student who can enroll now the advantages are great Dormitories formerly occupied by military personnel are now being reserved for civilian students Classroom and laboratory space too is plentiful In fact one finds at the college as in the nation a strong undercurrent of preparation for the peace a return to something more nearly like the normal All eyes are focussed on that goal which will end the war and begin the road back As American youth look inquiringly for their place on that road more and more are wanting the typical joys which only college life can bring They are sensing a genuine need for the training which it gives They are determined to find a secure place in America’s future They are aware that a college education which a generation ago was considered lamost a luxury for the few has today become an investment for the many The thoughtful student who can come will add to that investment now — John C Carlisle To Wed Or Not To Wed BALTIMORE— (ACP) — Give the wartime newlyweds books on philosophy and religion because — take it from a Goucher college professor — it’ll help them make their marriage a success They’ll need help too says Dr Raymond P Hawes philosophy professor who maintains 50 per cent of war marriages are foredoomed to failure “The wife sitting at home may change slowly” Hawes said “The man in the foxhole may change quickly Or conversely the girl may work in a war plant and change rapidly and the man in the foxhole may change little” Breaking down marriage into three basic levels — physical romantic and idealistic — Hawes said the first account for the most divorces The second which he described as the “egocentric school also will cause a large number of broken homes Hawes predicts But the third characterized as the school and which includes the first two levels is based on a common devotion and carries the greatest
