loved president As a result of the board action the students rallied in a fiery assembly on Monday in a demonstration of their loyalty towards their president E G Peterson lege officials Brig Gen Frank T Hines rector of the U S Veterans di- bu- reau will deliver the annual address to the graduates Joy Nelson Hulme of Salt Lake City valedictorian of the class of ’44 will discuss “Shall We Streamline Education?” Degrees to graduates will be conferred by Dr E G Peterson president of US AC C G Adney chair-maof the board of trustees Presiding at the assembly Dan H Ludlow president-elec- t of the Utah State student body introduced Thorpe B Isaacson of Salt Lake City board member who spoke before the students Isaacson revealed he came by invitation and was not asked to come by the board “We sincerely hope that all those who had to do with this decision may reconsider if so doing is right” Isaacson stated He was not present when voting took place n : will preside Musical numbers listed for the program are two selections by the women’s chorus directed by Professor W H Manning and a piano solo by Lucille Roylance of Smithfield candidate for graduation in the school of education Preliminary music will be a community song fest led by Professor Manning while entrance and exit marches will be played by the college orchestra under the direction of Professor N W Christiansen George Albert Smith president of the Quorum of Twelve of the LDS church will deliver the bac- calaureate sermon in the auditorium at 10 a m Sunday E E Monson member of the board of trustees will preside A statement will be made by President E by Mrs Christiansen selection by a double mixed quartet selection by a string trio composed of Reva Mae Anderson of Brigham Evangeline Ream of Logan and Miss Roylance Lieutenant Colonel Mortimer Chester post chaplain at Bushnell hospital and the Rev Miner E Bruner will offer prayers at commencement exercises while Dr W W Richards and Dr Daryl Chase will give prayers at baccalaureate services A reception for graduates parents alumni and faculty will be given by President and Mrs Peterson and the Alumni Association in the Commons building from 3: 30 to 5:30 p m Saturday G Peterson who recently answered negatively to the request by the board of trustees that he resign President Pays Tribute To Student Supporters In Wednesday Statement President Peterson Musical numbers will include a violin solo by Professor Christian- in sen accompanied Monday Assembly Finds Aggies At the request of your editor I am taking a little space this special issue of Student Life and I desire to tell you how proud we all have been during recent days to witness the magnificent expression from the students of loyalty to the college Such times as these I suppose come to many institutions they may be the hard test through which great ideas and great things must pass in order to prove their greatness It is so with the college These fires through which we now must pass will I have faith refine and strengthen the college for the stirring future which awaits it And as it goes into this future the true and noble character of what has been done in its behalf will be an imthe portant part of its history All of us connected with and college are proud to stand with you in the defense upbuilding of this great institution We fight the battle of the common man we cannot fail if we are true to this faith —E G P because of illness Dale Lewis then took the floor to deliver a startling speech in defense of President Peterson Following Lewis’s talk Henry Peterson board member of Logan took the stand by personal request and before a skeptical audience attempted to justify board action To be noted is the fact that he was formerly a professor of psychology at the USAC “I congratulate you students on your patriotism and expressions of loyalty” he began ‘This is a fine demonstration of your interest in the college” And his audience agreed He then repeated two alleged misrepresentations growing out of the current situation involving President Peterson First he said the “noise” concerning the ouster was not begun by a board member they were all pledged to secrecy so that President Peterson would have the chance to “gracefully step out” between now and a year hence The secret was let out of the bag through an avenue other than the board He then contended secondly that the board has no intention of curtailing educational processess at Utah State The board has not and never will so far as he can determine sabotage the college Then
