worms attain their full growth they eat their way out generally through the thie opposite side bide of the thel a apple appie ave and let themselves if t the le apple appie does not fall ta search for foe fora a place in which to spin their thein web and change to the cocoon or chrysalis in about two weeks flom from the timo time we the warm leaves leavo the apple appie the cocoon bursts b and a perfect moth comes out 0 i tit to lay more ggs eggs 6 thus there are several crops of moths buring the season the first crop in IV tho the spring is gener generally tilly cinalli email emall but bat they in crease in iff quantity until fall enow now the plan I 1 have pursued for several years yeara is to place bunches hunches of rags c cotton otton or sott bolt woolen in the crote crotches hos hod of my trees or tie them round the he principal limbs of the trunk and once a week examine them and kill all tho worms in a large orchard the easiest aud and most expeditious way is to attach a clothes wringer to a wheelbarrow take the rags down run them through the wringer and replace them in the trees again in IV taking the rags from the trees be careful to see seo that none nono of the worms drop r yi 0 off or remain sticking to f 0 me tho baik of the trees labout cabout five jears tears ago I 1 had bad an orchard that hab hat wasso was so infested with the moth that I got very few perfect apples apple and some of the trees though loaded with fruit in jn the spring did not ripen a single apple the second year after I 1 ad adopted opt the above plan I 1 had a fair crop and after thatis was a rare thing to find a wormy appie apple ewhen when the crop was gathered in gr 1 I am very particular every 13 spring pring when placing my rag traps to scrape all the loose bark from my trees so as to give the worm worms sno no harbor but the rags the tili experiments of mr air sellers I 1 in observing the habits and devising means for the destruction of therod the codling moth are of great importance as asbel being ng clearly confirmatory of the conclusions upon the character of th emoth amoth and the feasibility of the remedy proposed by the deseret horticultural society for their destruction truc tion what mr sellers as an individual has done upon his own farm in an isolated locality the citizens of salt lake lvke city cl y could do with unanimous concerted concer tedi systematic and persistent efroin but the exertions of a single individual only or even of a Ls iscore core score in a city of inhabitants though intelligently and per pe r applied would be about abou t equivalent in result to those of a man Jiving in an isolated place who would put the thi moth traps in and around a dozen or a score of the trees in his orchard and leave the remainder to take care of themselves the destruction of these fruit pests Is one of serious concern an and din in cities and towns with any well matured land and successful srul contrivance tr to td destroy destroys them available becomes at once onge a question ton peculiarly within the province of municipal surveillance the free commoner ordinance has no relevance whatever in the suppression of noxious and predatory insects such as the invading moth and the irrepressible locust or grasshopper grasch opper of years past pas t arid and bad any feasible plan or proposition from any responsible source been made while the grasshoppers were laying waste the fruit fruity vegetable and flower prospects of our c city and territory would any person have objected we do not know to what extent the bishope Bi B shops a are ar e interesting themselves in preparing for the seasons sea sony soni Is onslaught against the moths the matter has been reposed in them as public servants in a limited sense the plans apropo proposed ed by the horticultural hor ta society of this city have ha ve been adopted as a basis of operations these plans in briet brief consist t cleaning off all rough bark from the trees which we believe has been the next thing in order as we have published bubli shed is to place the traps in and around the trees to catch the first worms the progeny of bf the moth moths which commenced to 0 fly about the ath insi these traps trips consist of pieces of boards laid together to other ether around aroun and in the forks of of the trees between these boards the worms will take shelter to form a cocoon or chrysalis to i kill them examine the boards every few days crush whatever Is found between them and replace them again for new con ton conquests quests As to rags any old and worthless woolen eufra not fit for the paper mill may be used to good purpose care being taken not to let any of the worms escape The board trap however has many advantages it is quite apparent that if cotton cown rags tags and wringers wr ingers were to be universally ver sally brought into regus requisition the expenses anses of the war would be materia materially exl y increased and the supply ily gly of ras rags for paper making mig might t be e seriously imperilled imperil ledy iedy led which would be almost as great a calamity as the ther presence of the moths r |
