- AGRICULTURE COMMERCE Many desired improvements have taken place in the Agronomy department this year and various others are under contemplation One very essential addition is that of a laboratory for the Experiment Station In the past the Experiment work has been greatly handicapped because of the lack of suit- Although most of the old students know that the Commercail department occupies the greater part of the third floor of the main building it would be well for all new members to visit it and fee the kind of work which is carried on there able equipment for proper obser- at ion Now however it is hoped that the analytical work can be prosecuted as those in charge of it desire Another feature which will add greatly to the efficiency of the department is the addition of a laboratory for advanced students in Agricult ureThis is to be located in the basement of the main building It is not yet ready but when completed it will be a valuable factor in the work An Agronomy Library is the third new departure It occupies one of the new rooms made out of the former Drill Hall and is to be stocked with the very best new ond old works bearing on the subject of Agronomy 4 The Nevada University has a Girls’ Tennis club which expects to hold an inter-clas- s tennis tournament They will put up a silver cup as a trophy to go to the class carrying oil the honors —Ex MECHANIC ARTS I The three new courses as outlined in the last catalog are already attracting much attention as is shown by the fact that a large number jof students have changed from other courses to register under one of these Of the three viz Finance Accounting and Industrial Management the latter seems to be the most popular because it fits into the western idea of practical education The aim of this course is to prepare men for the manageto ment of industries peculiar the western countrv The Commercial club which was organized last vear has brought the students into closer acquaintance with each other as well ns with the department The club will have a big reception for all new members in the near future HOME ECONOMICS j r Registration in the Home Eco- On account of the fall work the registration in Mechanic Arts nomie's department shows a gratcomis never very large at this time ifying increase in numbers We have however at the end of the second week an divided as even half hundred follows : of the year Machine Work Blacksmithing Carpentry Tin’s is very satisfactory Students from other 13 14 23 depart- are ments who take not included in the above figure'’ This year two new courses are o tie red that of horse shoeing and wood carving The first no doubt will prove a great drawing card because of its necessity and therefore it should be popular The latter will do more to 'de- velop the aesthetic side of ur students in Mechanise Arts and it is to be hoped that they will take advantage of this oppor- tunity pared with registration the same In some classes dav last vear the number almost doubles that The greatest inof last year crease is found in the College classes — the Sophomores being in the lead That all conflicts are satisfactorily arranged and the classes in good working order is evidenced by the fact that the D S ’ll girls were treated upon their second appearance at clas to a wiitten quiz — the best of proof so they think of the working order of things in that section The Faculty Woman’s League held their first business meeting Friday September 20 at which was discus: ed a very interesting program for the coming year Amontf the events are several entertainments formal and informal for the Home Economics girls and for the other girls of the institution After the business wa transacted the members z were entertained by Mrs in one of her delightful songs and by Mrs Bowman with a beautifully rendered piano selection after which light refreshments were served The faculty of the Mechanic Arts department is very optimistic of the future Soon every school in this great land of ours will have it on its curriculum anr then as intended it will 4 To the young unmarried de- pr've a prime factor in our edusirable man of good habits and cational system 4 fine prospects who is pondering Schools and colleges report the A courre in Esperanto the the problem “Do college women classes ever marry?” “Ask one of them” new artificial language will be largest entering -- Ex given at Stanford this year — Ex known— Current Events Lin-nart- |
