Show Li — — PUBLISHED WEEKLY BY STUDENTS OF VOLUME VIII OUR FIRST FRIDAY OCTOBER FOOT-BALLSCRIMMA- fiE A GOOD SNAPPY PRACTICE To those who have anxiously watched the workings' of the football teams on the campus each afternoon and who have been paying attention to certain new individuals whose prospects have been bright and also to those who have taken interest enough to come out on the bleachers during practise hours that good old rousing and enthusiastic college spirit has returned It has a very good reason for taking hold of every' student in the institution Last Saturday afternoon on the campus back of the College the first scrimmage of the season made by “Mexie” and the rest of the tacklers all go to show the good hcadwork and skill with which the men are learning to play the game Frew was called away Satur- day afternoon so could not take part in the scrimmage but we all know his style as we know that of the others of last year’s men Paddock our captain who for the preceding two years has played tackle is now playing fullback and is making good 1 U A C 1909 One more point and perhaps the greatest of them all which the little twenty minute scrim- mage brought out most forcibly was the ability of our Coach C T Teetzel to coach a football team We are certainly very fortunate in having such a coach “The ocean’s depths are mute the shallows roar Thought sentiment and feeling are like the ocean Words are but the fruit along the shore” Come out and see for yourselves In-ha- ll “any-way-to-get-ther- k y) Prof Langton Displays His Ability as a Broncho Rider OPEN AIR EXER-CISEFO- R ALL An Opportunity For Some Good Sport (bee more the tennis club is in full swing and it is going to keep on swinging while there is an “A C” standing on’ the hill There are a few students who are very much interested in this delightful exercise and form of out-dothey propose to make the best possible use of the good weather while it lasts But these students arc not selfish they do not expect to monopolize the courts to the exclusion of others who may de l sire to participate On the contrary they extend a hearty invitation to all old and new to come out and partake of the intoxicating influence of a half hour’s or an hour's lively playing in the fresh mountain air For they be or 4 NUMBER 3 took place It was certainly encouraging to see the men play football Thej played as though they knew the game and they do know it Of course neither team played perfect ball It was not expected to see the team work as a unit The individuals showed some “class” and that means much towards a good team The game was fast snappy and yet full of individual mistakes The quarterbacks of both teams have good healthy voices and are so full of the life of the game that they fill their whole team with an earnest anxiety to DO! McCombs was out for the first time this season lie played center for the “reserves” and it would do anybody's heart good to see “Mae” work It is the same old story with him “Do all you can and do it now” The most sensational play of the afternoon was perhaps the one by “Ive” Egbert lie received t on a kick on his own 15 yard line and by a system of fad running dodging “straight aiming” placed it squarely behind the goal posts There was many another brilliant play by mei from both teams such ns the one by Smith the “reserve” half-bacwhen he carried the ball as in his kid-daaround right end for a 35 yard gain The beautiful little tackles S 3 lieve that a pleasure shared is a pleasure doubled The club now in running order is open for membership to all college students and members of the The organization has faculty been clTected to provide a form of vigorous out-doexercise for the girls and those of the fellows who prefer this form of sport to the various other games The rules of the club provide that each member shall supply himself with racket and tennis shoes If you arc interested further inquire of Coach Teetzel or any member of the club Do not hesitate to join because you fear there is no room on the courts for you There is room for all The authorities of the institution have promised that courts shall be made to accommodate all who desire to use them and be made just as fast as they are needed It is suggested that the high or (Continued on Page Three) THE BEE HAS STARTERBUZZING The “Buzzer” may already be said to have fairly started upon its career That this career will be a successful one we sincerely pray As yet no staff has been chosen as that is a matter requiring careful study and an intimate knowledge of the adaptability of the different candidates So far it has been impossible to obtain this knowledge but it is hoped and expected that in the near future we shall be able to choose a strong staff of editors and managers to produce this most important book Already the Junior class numbers nearly forty members and the number is increasing every day With so many to select from a strong staff is assured A contribution box will be placed in the halls soon and it is requested that any student who hears or sees anything interesting (and “interesting” includes “apiusing”) will write it up and place it in this box our fIstparty LARGE CROWD GOOD MUSIC JOLLY TIME The first college party came last Wednesday evening It was an event which will be long rememThe bered by those present managment had arranged everything so that all present had a good social time The floor managers and assistants consisting of Fred Bros-sar- d J C Robinson 0 G Lloyd Geo Caine Miss Bullen and Abe Cooley representing the student body Harry Stoney representing the townspeople and Prof Pedersen of the faculty succeeded admirably in getting the students to “mix” The dance was started promptly at 8 o’clock and did not lag for a moment until 11 o’clock when much to the regret of all present and the dissatisfaction of some the music ceased and all went home hoping that the next college party will not be far distant |
