Show STUDENT LIFE Domestic Science The young ladies of the cooking department did their share toward getting our team in proper spirit for their battle with the U of U For several evenings prior to the game the boys were served with the regular rations of beef and toast followed by singing and cheering practices in which the girls joined Considerable credit is due Miss Fisher for her efficient work in the department The classes are the largest in the history of the institution and have now satisfactorily finished the work of the fall term and are prepared for the winter courses This is indeed a favorable record for a new instructor and the department is fortunate in having secured the services of Miss Fisher The first dinner of the season given by the girls in the cooking department was the Thanksgiving dinner given by Miss Maude Egbert and Miss Inez Powell The table was decorated in a manner appropriate to the occasion having a centerpiece of a pumpkin shell filled with pears red apples and grapes around which were artistically arranged red and yellow ears of corn and heads of wheat Many of the usual dishes such as turkey and pumpkin pie were served to the credit of the young ladies and the satisfaction of the guests who were Miss Elizabeth Smith Mrs 97 Champ Prof and Mrs Langton Prof Arnold and Dr Emise Prof Cotey has lately received a case of samples from the Chemistry Department at Washington D C showing the adulteration of some of our common foods The collection contains about fifty samples of ground spices prepared preserves jams mustards etc and shows the adulterant and its per cent A number of cloth samples colored with the analine dyes taken from the preserved fruits are with the collection This is a valuable and interesting addition to Prof Cotey’s already large collection of food samples The sewing department has received a new case for the samples of textiles M iss Nellie Bennett one of our last year’s graduates in Domestic Science is teaching at the Nephi Utah High School Agriculture Undergraduates may note with satisfaction the recognition that is being given western men these days The students in Economic Entomology are now working on the insect enemies of the sugar beet — a very important work in view of the ravages of these pests last season Arrangements are being made for the winter course to be offered |
