By DAVE WIGHAM KAYSVILLE - With eight varsity wrestlers returt ing off of a good club last year Coach Frank Thompson seems on his way to a great year this year at the helm of the Davis wrestling program. TO GIVE further indications of things to come this year the Darts defeated Clearfield in their opening last match of the season week. Clearfield had already beaten East in a dual meet so the Falcons are no pushovers. What brings a smile to the coachs face though is the fact that seven of his wrestlers placed in the region meet a year ago and are back to improve on their finishes. 38-1- STARTING AT the bottom the Darts start out strong and finish in the same manner. Freshman Troy Meacham is holding down the spot at 98 pounds and his coach indicates that its only a matter of time before he gets really tough experience is the key here. In the 105 pound class the Davis club has junior Mike Taylor, who placed fourth at region as a sophomore. In fact in the three weights the Darts have people back who finished high in the region meet last year. SENIOR MAX Cloward is back at 112 after placing fourth a year ago, then senior Mark Moulton is back at 119. He too placed fourth a year ago in region. Junior Roger Parsell is back at 126 following a third place finish in region as a sophomore. The coachs son, Andy Thompson, holds down the spot at 132 and he gives the Darts a lot of experience. He is tall for his weight which creates some problems for opponents, plus with his father having taught him since who knows when, Andy knows just about all the moves and countermoves. nfr X Rocky Hit. He ts one of three wrestlers on the squad who hasn't had varsity experience up until thisa season. Drew Webster, senior with no experience, is at 145. Drew is shorter than most of his opponents but is extremely agile and quick as well as strong. Junior Gregg Shuller is learning the ropes in the tough 155 pounds classification and then three top region finishers round out the club. region a year ago. Jon is a strong competitor who has improved a great deal since his sophomore year. With these wrestlers back, Coach Thompson feels he has a strong club. Again the Box Elder club is considered very strong, and the Darts are looking forward to a great year on the mats. GARY PERCIVAL, a senior who placed fourth at region, is back at 167. Gary is tall and strong and knows the dedication it takes to be a winner. He is also the team captain. Senior Kevin Criddle is back at 185 after a third place finish as a junior a year ago.
