The District Seven Westminster berth in Kansas City went to Arizona State College as they edged Westminster College at Flagstaff, Arizona. The Parson team hurried home to Salt Lake with a possible chance of representing Willis G 4 Reid 6 Morris Nielsen 10 O Greene 4 Bliss Gibbons 0 Swenson 4 73-7- 1 Totals Carlisle in the A.A.U. tournament which started last night. The smaller men, consisting of Nielsen, Morris and Reid supplied the bulk of the Parson attack from the outside, while Bliss and Swenson could only score 11 and 9 points apiece. Arizona State College boasted a 14-- 9 mark. Westminster has been in the NAIA national tournament two out of the last four years and has qualified as northern champion of the district in five of the last six years. Last year touted -Salem whipped the Parsons in the first round of jacks of ArS.C. hit 49 per cent of their shots, while the Parsons shot 41 per cent, well under their season average of 49 per cent. The fouls also told another story; the Parsons were assessed 20 calls against them, while the Lumberjacks garnered only 13, personal Winston- the Kansas City meet. fouls. Parson Gagers End Season 15-- 8 64-5- and , 9 70-6- The first game was Westminster all the way as the team shot a nifty 45, showing why it is fifth in the nation in field goal percentage. High scorer in the game was Parson forward Ron Swenson who dumped in 19 points. Guard Jerry Jim Nielsen, guard-forwarMorris and center Gary Bliss followed with 11, 10 and 10 respectively. Gary Locke was top man for the Idaho five with 18. The big word in describing the game would have to be defense. The Westminster club used a tight zone to keep the home team from scoring with any continuity. Although the Parsons couldnt break the game wide open, their defensive tactics kept the Crusaders from closing the gap. This was the third straight win over the Nampa crew and the first time Richs wnrds have been able to win the initial as visitors at the Nampa home court. The Parsons outscored NNC from the field, 27-2but were edged in the free throw d 4, Westmindepartment, ster split the nets on 27 of 76 .11-1- 0. field goals and NNC connected on 24 of 69. Both clubs took 18 shots from the foul - line. The next night found the Parsons having a little harder time of it. In fact, at the halftime they were behind by a score. Regis has been playing a major college schedule for the whole basketball year and it seemed some of their oppositions ability had rubbed off as they clobbered Westmin. ster The game was rather close for the first sixteen minutes but then Regis seemed to catch fire as their fast break offense opened up the scoring gap and finally leading the Parson at the half by a 40-3- 3 score. 99-66- . THE PARSONS just couldnt hit and consequently they fell further and further behind the Denver team. In fact, Westminster only lost at a 35 pace with Gary Bliss getting most of the points, splitting the nets for 31 counters. The next closest men were guard Duane Greene and Jim Morris adding 9 apiece. Larry Reid followed with 6. guard-forwar- d ED Record s four basketball seasons at Westminster, we see that the teams have been exceptionally good. Each year seems to produce a little better material but Rich seems to think that this years squad has potentially been his best. Unfortunately for the team and the school the breaks havent always been good for the Parsons. Westminster has been well represented in district and national playoffs throughout the last few years. If you were to look back over the last eight years; win-los- s their 142-5- 4 record looks more than just terrific. Its been a real pleasure to work with the boys this year, commented Coach Richardson. Theyve been a fine bunch and the whole school can be real proud of their efforts. Were proud of them and you, too, Rich. We hope you are successful in the future years as you and your teams have been in the last eight seasons. by Dick Homrighouse This last year has been a good year for the Westminster basketball team and its coach, Howard Richardson. The team has had its ups and downs but was consistent enough to rack up a very respectable season record of 17 wins and. 9 losses. The Parsons lost some tough ones to to Carroll College, 68-6. 7, College in the Top of the World Tournament at Alamosa, Colorado, and to Weber College But they also at Ogden, had the big games, too, beating Whitman College by 28 and 26 points, Carroll by 28 Pan-Americ- 9, 82-8- 1. itself together during the second half, until they had tied the score at 53 alL Jerry Nielsen and Jim Mor-ris were the muscles behind the scoring punch Westminster used to finally f go ahead of the Crusaders in the last three minutes of play, G645. In the pre- vious five minutes the score was Ued five times and the lead exchanged hands ten times before the Parsons finally surged ahead. This win was the fourth straight time the Parson had beaten the Nampa crew and the seventh time during the last two seasons. The biggest point total by Westminster during the season was a 100-7- 0 romp over Casper College and the most ; disastrous defeat was at the hands of Regis by a 99-6- 6 count. In the Top of the World Tournament Westminster finished in second place out of a field of eight teams from all over the Southwest. The team that beat them for the championship is ranked eighth in the nation in small college ranks. Also in the 300 club were Gary Bliss with a 336 total and Jerry Nielsen who blitzed in 307. Bliss connected for 132 field goals and 72 free throws while Nielsen had 133 field goals and 41 gift shots. . AS A TEAM the Parsons shot a nationally-rankefield goal percentage of 52.5 and also a very good 67.8 on their free throws. They had a point total of 1697 for 23 games as opposed to a visitors 1524.
