Albert Pike Courtesy Look It has been announced that the speaker for the June 8, 1962, Baccaureate will be the Right Reverend James Albert Pike, Protestant Episcopal Bishop to the Diocese of California. Bishop Pike is one of the most controversial churchmen that the Episcopal Church has experienced in recent years. Since he became Dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, Pike has been constantly in the news. His book, Roman Catholic in the White nouse, placed him in the center of religious debate. Pike has vexed the House Activities Un-Americ- Committee, demanding its abolition. He has taken a strong stand for birth control and called the virgin birth a myth, which started a movement of heresy against him. Pike ' firmly supported the recommendation for unification of the Protestant Episcopal Methodist, United Presbyterian, and United Church denominations. However, when World War II began, Pike, reflecting upon the values by which mankind lives, wTent to a local Episcopal church, which offered a series of Lenten lectures. This time there were no conflicts. In 1944 Pike decided that the need for ministers was greater than the need for lawyers. Only fourteen years had elapsed from the time Pike had en- tered seminary until the time he was made Bishop of California.
