| Show THE CASE or OF dele DEtE DELEGATE GATE CANNON THE san ban francisco chronicle has the following dispatch dated date d washington in ton jan 22 the minority report from the commit committee teb on elections in the case of nir mr cannon of utah recommends that the committee be dis charged from further consideration of the subject the report goes at length I 1 into nto a statement or of the relations or of a delegate to the hause and that cannon has all the right and privileges of a member it is eon bon contended tended that members should not be expelled for political relations or on account of the ex ek istance of any societies in the tho ter 1 ritney or state they represent nor should they be punished nor for alleged i indulgence in sueh tsuch practices ex i i capt after a hearing beating in a coult court of jus justice justlee tice mr cannon is charged with rith being the first delegate that bas has been guilty of polygamy admitting this to be the fac tand that it is intended to strike stride a blow at mormonism is it ib good policy to strike the blow in this way by expelling a delegate the fact that the house recently admitted delegates representing mormonism should relieve air cannon from expulsion As to the charge that mr cannon had bad married his fourth wife subsequent to the passage of th t act of july 1874 1871 which declared polygamy ya a felony i the minority says it goes fosnaught for naught because mr cannon has not been convicted either under that act or what is known as the poland law the house should not convict him in advance of the action of the courts arts the report also sets fiets forth the fact that mr cannon is now under an indictment in the courts of utah for polygamy and contends that it would be an act of gleat gloat in justice to prejudice his case besides it is a serious question whether the subject of expulsion on moral or immoral grounds should be entertained and the re report port puts the very pertinent question tion if the house is to indu inquire i re into he the moral fitness of lt its members where will the ther inquiry stop this report is feigned ned ded only by mr harrison but f four our oth other othen e r members of con CoD congress gress lamar crossland speer and thomas concur in the men moen dation dadon that we committee be dl charged from further consideration of the subject subjection in that they fully endorse all of mr harrisons Harri harrl sonis V views lews 11 |
