Show UTAH WESTERN RAILWAY tre THE utah western railway as the company is at present organized is intended to run between this city and stockton 45 miles it is a narrow or three feet gauge the line commences at the tho southwest south west cor ner of the depot in this city runs down south temple street across the jordan about a quarter of a mile south of the north temple street streek bridge and then over the prairie westward to chambers stage stige station at the foot of the west or oquirrh Mounta mountains inQ and a mile or so south of the point continuing on to and around the point by black boek bock into tooele thoele valley yesterday gentlemen and ladles adles by invitation stepped into the utah western cars at the depot and enjoyed a very pleasant trip to the end of the track a distance of 11 miles or to within a mile of chambers stage station and back among the company were S D connor H P kimball G W thatcher jeter clinton young A C and an JN pike esar of the officers of the road mesdames clinton and young gens connor and barnum of the old board J john ohn lawson and J T mcgregor esis I 1 S hills hill esq and lady W W riter biter superintendent summit co B R B R frank cope and douglas swan esis of the U C R BB R P L williams and legrand young esis and ladies ladles drs benedict and ladies D P kimball esq and lady misses canfield and anav V young col IL T Bur bartons buttons tons lady dr mary H barker BJ golding county and territorial assessor and collector OP ofa of siu SIj street B R R BH H G park esq and lady dady H S 13 eattle beattie HP richards rie bie hards M cox J duke T williams B watson watsen J clari clars and G bourne esis Es a of Z C aa M I 1 with their zia ladles ladies dies W conrad esq and lady NV calder esq A dewey esq and lady J T caine esq and lady W C dunbar B groo and fuller ests of the kerald also other representatives of the city press the company were accommodated in two beautiful new passenger cars ears one a smoking and baggage car and the other a first class car elegantly fitted up with a drawing room or saloon at one end with brussels carpet lounges chairs lavatory and other conveniences and private closet for writing etc the company however filled these two cars and an open observation car also the party left the depot about half past ten a m the early eaily morning was somewhat foggy but it soon cleared up and became fine bright nid ald ald aid beautiful the cars ran with remarkable smoothness considering that along 7 the greater part of the way the road was not ballasted ballested bal bai lasted in about three quarters of an hour the prairie was crossed and the train arrived at the end of the track when the thu company aliel alighted ted and most of the gentlemen 2 and ud ladies walked a few hundred yards further along the grade and back soon after twelve the train rain started on the return to the city arriving about one unlock the trip and the road may be pronounced a perfect success the road is graded continuously round the point reint and onward for eight and a half miles which is ia ready for the ties and rails it is anticipated that the track will be laid as nar far as cliftons Clin tons nearly twenty miles in all soon after the new year say about jan 10 the remainder of the route to stockton to be pushed along as fast as convenient another party went out today to day and henceforth regular trains for passenger and freight will run daily the sameness ot of scenery on the prairie so far as the track is laid is rather redeemed by the breath of fresh air which one gets by going over there as ene one finds oneself in I 1 the full sweep of the breeze along the chain of valleys from north to south which is very grateful on a hot summers summers the scenery was rather rathey monotonous tc ordinary observers yet some of the party evidently admired it greatly and aud loved to langei loth to return to urban scenes judging budging by the devoted manner in which they stuck to the solitary and motionless observation car in the middle of the wide prairie disconnected and left behind half a mile mlle accidentally of course enterprises of this kind are most important in developing the resources and in building up a country and great credit is due to the officers of the utah western for the enterprise activity and vigor 40 they have shown in putting the road in working order so far it being only twenty days since tie and commenced on the road |
