In any given year you’re going to find your basic “serious” Valentine But for 1982 it’s the vogue to be old fashioned and unabashedly corny right across the board The great insult Valentines of Vietnam protest years are out Gone No women’s lib g cards Forget the generation of activism and yippies It’s back to hard work a rotten economy and rampant unemployment which one expert said makes people romantic Richard Bene a spokesman for the American Greetings card company in Cleveland Ohio says this goo trend is no mistake: “It’s what the American people want” And who’s to argue with Bene His company employs a research staff that is so exhaustive this year’s card of love was planned 2z years ago In fact if you wanted to predict who was going to win the presidential election way back when the American Greetings card research staff could have told you about the e values mood swing to conservative in America Even though you may be out of work the belief is that you really want to tell your loved ones how much you care And you’re getting to do it in numerous ways “Soft lace Delicate artwork A lot of thought goes into the flowchart of each of these cards” Bene says He describes how a card like the the American Greetings edition we picked up gets to seling and Marilyn accompanied him “We’re not in marriage counseling per se” Steve says “but by improving ourselves we are improving our marriage The better able you are to cope with yourself and your environment the better partner you are” Atkinson says marriage counseling frequently involves individual therapy “The typical stereotype of marriage counseling is someone teetering on divorce and you save the marriage from diving off the cliff” the counselor says The problem is usually “things are just not right and not as happy as they want them to be and they just need some good old therapy” Atkinson says Steve was married for nine years to his first wife and that marriage was based on a bad hard-fightin- run-of-the-m- “First the research committee takes flower-bordere- d gold-lettere- I Love” Inside more flowers and the inscription on the left page “Happy Valentine’s Day — I’ll Always Love You” followed by the poem on the right page: “Each dream of mine begins and ends “With loving thoughts of you “And you’re the most important part “Of everything I do “You’re on my mind you’re in my heart “Each moment of the day “And no one else in all the world “Could make me feel this way” Serious stuff eh? That’s the type of inscription written by the creative staff that gets to people Bene says “Valentine’s Day is special It’s the one day in the year where you’re supposed to step back and say ‘I love you’ It’s a day reserved for that type of feeling You know things could be wrong You might be out of work money’s tight but you still want to show your wife or somebody you care” Bene savs the tight economy usually means ill 3G premise “In a nutshell my first wife didn’t love me” he says He and his wife sought counseling but the relationship ended in divorce However Steve continued counseling and learned how to improve his communication skills Steve says he shared those skills with Marilyn and as a result they have a marriage based on trust and mutual respect “There’s nothing in the world she and I can’t talk about” he says looking at Marilyn “The counselor didn’t solve my problems" he says “He taught me how to solve my own problems” Steve says his inability to relate to Marilyn’s two daughters children of her first marriage was the catalyst for his seeking therapy “The problem with myself and these guys he (the daughters) was my low I was the was these “I way guys says treating treated when I was their age “We went intitially (to counseling) for my sake but it’s doing Marilyn good too because ” she has the same problem of low Steve says he and Marilyn both had similar childhoods with many negative aspects and they don’t want their two sons and two daughters to grow up with the same problems The Wests say they will both benefit from the therapy even though it is not directly related to their marriage and “I’m sure if I can raise my with more I’m to at come the point where peace myself I’ll be more at peace with her and to that extent it affects the marriage” Steve says self-imag- e” self-esteem- self-imag- e ago By BILL KACZOR Associated Press Writer DESTIN Fla (AP) — When Delbert Marler visited Miami Beach years ago he’d complain that he couldn’t even see the beach because of high-ris- e hotels and condominiums He couldn’t wait to get back home to the picturesque fishing village here about 50 miles east of Pensacola “Uncle Billy” Marler named it after New Englander Leonard s when they founded the town in the Until 1972 Destin didn’t have a single condominium Now there are 3370 condominium units and the town is flooded with construction workers building 1105 more units “We don’t know there is a recession going on” said Anita Kroha executive director of the Destin Chamber of Commerce De-sti- n mid-1800- sur- veys We look at a card as a fashion item much like clothing “Many types of studies are conducted and ideas are formed These ideas go to the creative staff At each stop along the way we have management meetings to determine if we like the card” Bene says Our example is a typical of the return to “romance nostalgia and Americana” Bene says Complete with a light pink envelope the card comes with pink roses outlined in gold and embossed on pink and lace parchment d heart paper with a large of middle the in front the page plucked The card is trimmed in metallic gold and it’s message on the front top of the card says it Delbert’s mother Stella would know when his father Captain Lave was coming home because she could see his fishing boat in the Gulf of Mexico across the harbor g barrier and the white sands of a island But now when his mother and neighbors look across the harbor from their homes above the docks what they see looks more like the Miami Beach he used to scoff at than the Destin of his youth or even the Destin of 10 blue-gree- n The above card is typical of the return to romance this Valentine's Day increased card sales because cards cost less than gifts “This year we’ve come out with a line of cards that is really done large and well and it might sell instead of a gift” Indeed some American Greetings cards on local shelves like the competitions’ versions over at Hallmark and Norcross are selling in their own box for $350 per card And the mood of love is infectious Even American Greetings employees at their Brigham City distribution plant get psyched up for the different times of the year plant manager Bob MacFarland says And that’s even though the plant handles what are known as “every day greeting cards” and workers never see seasonal cards At the Arkansas plant where the Valentine’s cards were distributed from the workers are always one step ahead of themselves because cards are distributed a season ahead of time MacFarland says “The Valentine’s card you are buying now was distributed during the Christmas season” he says Arkansas plant personnel manager Jim Myers says his employees change moods becuse of the distribution schedule at wierd times Christmas in the fall makes them friendly and Valentine’s Day at Christmas “makes them a little more mellow and romantic” Which may just demonstrate the point that as the employees seem to show a card can make all the difference in the world Happy Valentine’s Day MARE-C’- s Bath tricks Actress Mary Ann Mobley told Beauty low-lyin- IT'S A FACT 0 You’ll find the elegant the unusual gift at prices you can afford at
